Chapter 6 - The Record from Claire’s Birth

The hospital record listed Eleanor Vance as the patient.

The infant information had been partially obscured.

Grant held it toward the camera.

“The Restoration Fund passes only to Eleanor’s biological child.”

Claire felt Arthur move behind her.

Grant continued.

“What happens if that is not you?”

Arthur reached for the screen as though he could take the paper through it.

“That record is incomplete.”

“So you have seen it,” Claire said.

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

The truth arrived in pieces.

Eleanor suffered complications during pregnancy and delivered at a private hospital in another state. The official birth certificate named Arthur and Eleanor as Claire’s parents.

A second hospital record suggested Eleanor’s infant died shortly after delivery.

The surviving baby was listed only as Female V.

Arthur claimed it was an administrative error created during an emergency transfer.

“Did Mom give birth to me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see it?”

“I arrived after the surgery.”

“Did she believe I was hers?”

“She never questioned it.”

“That was not my question.”

Arthur’s face changed.

“No. I did not see the delivery.”

Grant believed Claire had been substituted with another infant and therefore lacked authority over Eleanor’s trust.

If he could create legal doubt, the Restoration Fund would freeze during litigation.

He would gain months to move Whitmore assets beyond recovery.

Rachel examined the document image.

“The hospital closed twenty years ago. Records were transferred to a private archive.”

“Owned by whom?” Claire asked.

“Whitmore Medical Services.”

Grant’s family controlled the evidence supporting his claim.

The record might be genuine.

It might be fabricated.

Either way, it was leverage.

Claire looked at Eleanor’s video inside file seven.

Her mother had built the fund around a biological requirement.

Why would she do that if she doubted Claire’s identity?

Another hidden note appeared beneath the trust terms.

Blood is not the proof. The scar is.

Claire touched the small crescent scar beneath her left shoulder.

Eleanor told her it came from a neonatal procedure.

Arthur had never explained it.

The trust contained a sealed genetic sample collected from Eleanor before her death.

Claire could establish maternity through independent testing.

Grant had anticipated that too.

A message arrived from the laboratory holding the sample.

STORAGE UNIT COMPROMISED.

Someone had entered the facility and removed Eleanor’s material.

Grant wanted uncertainty to survive.

Vanessa sent a location pin from her phone before it went offline.

It pointed to an abandoned Whitmore construction site near the river.

Police and Arthur’s security team entered at dawn.

They found Vanessa inside a locked equipment trailer with bruises around one wrist.

Grant and Martin were gone.

Vanessa insisted she had not known about the forged divorce when Grant first married her.

He told her Claire had agreed to remain a public partner for business reasons.

By the time Vanessa learned the truth, she had already signed company documents and accepted millions in property.

“Why humiliate me?” Claire asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“Because he told me you knew everything and still treated me like a secret.”

“You wore my earrings.”

“I wanted you to react.”

“And when he hit me?”

“I was afraid if I defended you, he would turn on me.”

“He did anyway.”

Vanessa nodded.

Her cooperation did not erase her cruelty.

It gave investigators access to Grant’s private calendar, secondary accounts, and safe locations.

One entry repeated every month.

MEETING M.

The location belonged to a rehabilitation residence outside Dallas.

Martin Hale had lived there under an assumed name for six years.

Grant found him eighteen months earlier.

He used Martin’s past transfers from the Restoration Fund to threaten prosecution.

Martin then helped forge Arthur’s signature and build the loan guarantee.

“Did Martin create the fake divorce?” Rachel asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That was someone else.”

“Who?”

“Grant called her E.”

Arthur went still.

“Eleanor?”

“Grant said E built the first version of file six.”

Claire looked toward her mother’s recorded image.

Eleanor had created file six.

But she had been dead eight years before the forged divorce.

Vanessa continued.

“Grant met E in person three months ago.”

Rachel searched the calendar.

The meeting location was the Vance family mausoleum.

Security cameras showed Grant entering alone.

Twenty minutes later, an older woman left through the rear service gate wearing a dark veil.

Her face remained hidden.

She carried Eleanor Vance’s walking cane.

Arthur sat down.

“That cane was buried with her.”

The mausoleum was opened under police supervision.

Eleanor’s coffin remained sealed.

The exterior showed no damage.

Inside the lower chamber, investigators found a recently used office, financial files, and a private communication system connected directly to file seven.

Someone had been operating beneath Eleanor’s grave.

On the desk rested the missing genetic sample.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

Claire does not need to prove she is my daughter.

May you like

She needs to prove Arthur is her father.

Continue to the next part: The investigation shifts toward Arthur when Eleanor’s hidden note questions which man helped create the heir to the Vance fortune.
