Chapter 7 - THE KEY BEHIND HANNAH’S EAR

Hannah removed the external processor from her ear.
The implant beneath the skin remained.
She looked at Ethan with disbelief.
“Your father used me.”
“He may have believed he was protecting the key.”
“He placed a target inside my head without telling me.”
The betrayal did not become acceptable because Thomas’s intentions had been good.
Martin knew Hannah would eventually discover the truth.
He had planned to remove the implant after obtaining Evelyn’s transfer.
“Bring Hannah to the west entrance,” Martin ordered. “No weapons.”
Detective Rhodes muted the communication.
“We are not exchanging anyone.”
“If the biometric override succeeds, he controls the trust,” Ethan said.
“Money does not determine our hostage protocol.”
“My mother’s death certificate is already prepared.”
“And bringing another victim inside gives him two.”
Hannah touched the scar.
“Can the key be copied externally?”
A federal technician examined the implant model.
The memory component could communicate with diagnostic equipment over a short distance.
Evergreen House contained the required equipment.
If Hannah stood near the west entrance, technicians might transmit a false key while federal agents entered through the utility tunnel.
Hannah agreed.
Not because Thomas had placed the key inside her.
Because Evelyn remained restrained in the laboratory.
Ethan walked beside her toward the west entrance under hidden protection.
“You can still stop.”
“So can you.”
“I am not carrying the key.”
“No. You are carrying the belief that every dangerous part belongs to you.”
Ethan looked at her.
She was right.
His first instinct had been to enter alone, confront Martin, and remove everyone else from risk.
That instinct could become another form of control.
They reached the steel door.
A scanner activated near Hannah’s ear.
Federal technicians intercepted the signal.
Martin’s equipment requested the encryption key.
They sent a false sequence.
The door unlocked.
A man in surgical clothing pulled Hannah inside.
Ethan remained outside as ordered.
The door closed.
Every part of him wanted to force it open.
Detective Rhodes’s voice came through his earpiece.
“Hold.”
Inside, Hannah entered the biometric laboratory.
Martin Bell stood behind Evelyn’s chair.
Dr. Moore remained near the medical console.
Claire’s brother, Marcus Madison, held a pistol.
He had received three million dollars through the forged accounts.
Claire had protected him throughout the investigation.
Martin looked at Hannah.
“Remove the processor.”
She placed it on the table.
“You cannot access the internal memory without surgery.”
“Dr. Moore has performed more difficult procedures.”
Moore shook his head.
“I am not touching her.”
Marcus raised the pistol.
“You will.”
Martin turned toward Evelyn.
“Authorize the transfer.”
Her eyes moved toward the scanner.
She intentionally closed them.
Martin gripped her jaw.
“You have spent months pretending weakness gives you moral authority.”
Evelyn produced one broken sound.
“No.”
It was the clearest word she had spoken since the poisoning began.
Martin’s face tightened.
He pressed her thumb against the scanner.
The machine rejected it because her pulse pattern did not match the stored baseline.
Years of drugs had altered her circulation.
The system requested the encryption key.
The false code from Hannah’s implant entered.
ACCESS DENIED.
Martin looked toward her.
“You knew.”
Hannah said nothing.
Marcus grabbed her arm.
Federal agents entered through the utility corridor.
Dr. Moore dropped to the floor.
Marcus turned his weapon toward Evelyn.
Hannah moved between them.
The gun fired.
Ethan heard the shot outside.
The tactical commander authorized entry.
He crossed the door only after federal agents secured the corridor.
Hannah lay beside Evelyn’s chair.
Blood covered the sleeve of her beige scrubs.
The bullet had passed through her upper arm.
Evelyn remained unharmed.
Marcus was restrained.
Martin had disappeared through a rear medical passage.
Dr. Moore surrendered.
Before fleeing, Martin initiated the facility’s destruction system.
Smoke poured from the records wing.
Federal agents evacuated Hannah and Evelyn.
Ethan helped push his mother’s chair outside while medics treated Hannah.
The laboratory burned behind them.
Dr. Moore shouted from the police vehicle.
“Martin has Claire’s second trust!”
“What second trust?” Ethan demanded.
“Thomas created another document before he died. If Evelyn cannot authorize the company transfer, Claire inherits through a pregnancy clause.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Claire is not pregnant.”
Moore looked toward the ambulance carrying Hannah.
