Chapter 6 - THE ELEVATOR CAMERA

Hospital security footage showed Hannah entering Evelyn’s room at 2:14 in the morning.
She remained inside for four minutes.
At 2:19, the fire alarms activated.
At 2:20, two people in medical uniforms pushed Evelyn’s bed toward the service elevator.
Hannah followed them.
The elevator camera went dark before the doors closed.
Hannah stood beside Ethan while detectives reviewed the footage.
“That is not me.”
The woman on the screen had the same height, hair, and beige scrubs.
Her face remained hidden behind a surgical mask.
“You entered the room first,” Rhodes said.
“I was with Ethan when the alarm started.”
The earlier figure could have been Hannah.
Or someone dressed to resemble her.
Security records showed Hannah’s badge opened the room.
She still possessed the physical badge.
Someone had cloned it.
The hospital found another nurse unconscious inside a supply closet.
Her uniform and credentials were missing.
She remembered a brunette woman approaching from behind.
The description matched Hannah closely enough to support the disguise.
Claire had warned Ethan because she knew Martin had prepared Hannah as the next false identity.
Every operation used the same structure.
Create documents.
Copy access.
Make one living person appear responsible.
The service elevator descended to the underground ambulance bay.
A black medical transport vehicle left during the alarm.
Its registration belonged to Carter Senior Living.
The authorization bore Ethan’s signature.
Another forgery.
Hannah opened Thomas’s ledger.
The transport company appeared inside it.
Its remote vehicles had moved sedated elderly patients between facilities without notifying families.
Some patients died during transfer.
Their estates were redirected through guardianships controlled by Martin.
Evelyn was not only a witness.
She was the final trustee capable of releasing records and revoking Martin’s access to hundreds of millions in senior care property.
If he obtained her fingerprint and retinal scan, he could transfer everything before her death.
The eye tracking message suggested Evelyn understood the plan.
Hannah did not come alone.
Perhaps she meant Thomas had sent another person.
Hannah revealed the name of the federal investigator who worked with him.
Special Agent Laura Mitchell.
Detective Rhodes contacted the FBI.
Laura Mitchell had officially died in a boating accident four years earlier.
No body was recovered.
The pattern was familiar.
A witness declared dead without physical confirmation.
The medical transport vehicle appeared on a traffic camera near Lake Forest.
It entered an abandoned Carter rehabilitation facility closed after Thomas’s death.
Ethan knew the building.
His father called it Evergreen House.
It contained biometric laboratories used to test accessibility systems for elderly patients.
Martin could force Evelyn to authorize the trust there.
Federal agents surrounded the facility.
Detective Rhodes ordered Ethan and Hannah to remain behind the tactical perimeter.
Hannah objected.
“She may respond to my voice.”
“They have her because of your connection.”
“They have her because she can expose them.”
Ethan looked toward the dark building.
“Can Evelyn intentionally fail the biometric scan?”
“Yes,” Hannah said. “But the system allows three attempts before triggering a medical exception.”
“What happens then?”
“A physician can override it.”
Dr. Moore.
The live hostage video had been recorded inside a windowless room.
He might already be at Evergreen House.
Federal teams entered through the east wing.
The first floor was empty.
The second contained medical records prepared for destruction.
The biometric laboratory stood below ground.
Agents found the entrance sealed by an internal steel door.
Martin’s voice entered the police radio frequency.
“Ethan, your mother has five minutes before Dr. Moore certifies neurological death.”
A camera feed appeared.
Evelyn sat restrained inside a medical chair.
Dr. Moore stood beside her.
His bruises were real.
A weapon was held beyond the camera frame.
Martin remained unseen.
“I need the ledger Hannah carries,” he said.
“You already copied it,” Ethan answered.
“I need Thomas’s original encryption key.”
“Hannah does not have it.”
Martin laughed softly.
“Thomas placed it inside the only person he trusted.”
Ethan looked toward Hannah.
Her face changed.
“What does he mean?”
Hannah touched the old scar behind her left ear.
Thomas had paid for her cochlear implant after she lost part of her hearing during childhood.
The implant had been replaced three weeks before his death.
The encryption key was hidden inside its memory component.
Thomas had placed the evidence inside Hannah without telling her.
Martin did not need her testimony.
May you like
He needed part of her body.
Continue to the next part: Martin threatens to operate on Hannah while Evelyn fights to prevent the final trust transfer.
