Chapter 4

The storm outside showed no signs of slowing.

Rain pounded relentlessly against the mansion as flashes of lightning illuminated the marble hallway.

Victoria stood frozen, staring at the expensive suitcases beside the front door.

"They're... mine?" she whispered.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the inside pocket of his gray suit and calmly placed a thick brown envelope on the marble table.

"What is this?" Victoria asked, her voice trembling.

"Open it."

With shaking hands, she pulled out the documents.

Her eyes widened.

Property transfer papers.

Bank account authorizations.

Credit card cancellations.

A postnuptial agreement she had signed years ago without ever reading the details.

"No..."

She flipped through the pages faster.

"No... this can't be happening."

Richard's voice remained calm.

"It already has."

Victoria looked at him desperately.

"Richard, please... we can talk about this."

"You don't mean any of it."

Richard looked into her eyes without the slightest emotion.

"I've spent the last two weeks learning the truth."

"I watched every security recording."

"I read every hospital report."

"I spoke with every servant."

"I even visited Emily's school."

Victoria's breathing became uneven.

Richard continued.

"Do you know what her teacher told me?"

Silence.

"She said every Mother's Day celebration ended with Emily sitting alone."

"Because the woman she invited..."

"...never came."

Victoria swallowed hard.

Richard pulled another paper from the envelope.

"It wasn't you who attended her school performances."

"It wasn't you who signed her homework."

"It wasn't you who stayed beside her hospital bed."

He turned toward Elena.

"It was her."

Elena immediately lowered her head.

"Sir... please..."

"I never wanted to cause problems."

Richard smiled sadly.

"You never caused the problem."

"You spent three years fixing someone else's."

Emily quietly walked over and took Elena's hand.

She refused to let go.

Victoria's voice suddenly rose.

"So what if she looked after Emily?"

"That's what maids are paid to do!"

The room fell silent.

Every servant stared at the floor.

Richard slowly closed his eyes.

When he opened them again...

The disappointment inside them hurt far more than anger.

"That's exactly why you'll never understand."

He walked toward Elena.

"When she carried Emily through the rain to the hospital..."

"She wasn't thinking about her salary."

"When she stayed awake for three nights..."

"She wasn't thinking about her paycheck."

"When Emily cried because she missed her mother..."

"She wasn't doing her job."

"She was loving a lonely child."

He looked back at Victoria.

"And love..."

"...cannot be bought."

Victoria suddenly rushed toward him.

"I'll change!"

"I promise!"

"I'll spend more time with Emily."

"I'll quit the parties."

"I'll do anything!"

Emily instinctively hid behind Elena.

Richard noticed.

That single reaction answered every question.

A child always knows who makes her feel safe.

He knelt beside Emily.

"Sweetheart."

She looked into his eyes.

"Tell Daddy."

"If Victoria stays..."

"Will you be happy?"

Emily didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

She slowly wrapped one arm around Elena.

Then she quietly shook her head.

"No..."

Richard closed his eyes for a brief moment.

When he stood again...

His decision was final.

"Victoria Harrison."

"I gave you three years."

"My daughter gave you hundreds of chances."

"You wasted every one of them."

He picked up the two luxury suitcases himself.

The same suitcases Victoria had filled with designer dresses, jewelry, and handbags over countless shopping trips.

He rolled them across the marble floor.

Each sound echoed like the final chapter of a failed marriage.

Stopping at the open front door, he placed the luggage outside in the pouring rain.

Victoria burst into tears.

"You can't do this!"

"I'm your wife!"

Richard answered quietly.

"No."

"A wife protects her family."

"A mother protects her child."

"You did neither."

His voice grew firm.

"You wanted to throw away the one person who truly loved my daughter."

"Tonight..."

"You leave instead."

Victoria collapsed onto her knees.

"Please..."

"I have nowhere to go."

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

Then he spoke the words she would remember for the rest of her life.

"You should have thought about that..."

"...before making an eight-year-old girl feel like she had no one."

He stepped aside.

"The door is open."

Victoria looked around desperately.

Not a single servant moved.

Not a single person defended her.

For three years, they had watched Elena silently sacrifice everything for Emily.

Tonight...

Justice had finally arrived.

With tears streaming down her face, Victoria slowly picked up the handles of her suitcases.

The diamonds around her neck sparkled beneath the chandelier one last time.

Then she walked into the rain.

The massive front door closed behind her.

And with it...

An empty chapter of the Harrison family finally ended.

The mansion became quiet again.

Only the sound of rain remained.

Emily looked nervously at her father.

"Daddy..."

"Is Elena leaving too?"

Richard smiled for the first time that night.

He walked toward Elena.

She immediately lowered her head.

"If... if you'd still like me to work here..."

Richard gently interrupted her.

"No."

"You've worked long enough."

Elena looked up in confusion.

"What do you mean, sir?"

Richard knelt beside Emily.

Then he looked at Elena with eyes filled with gratitude.

"For three years..."

"You protected the most precious person in my life."

"You expected nothing in return."

"I can never repay that."

He reached into another envelope.

Inside was a set of house keys.

A bank document.

And a folded letter.

"I transferred ownership of the guest house on this property into your name."

Elena's eyes widened.

"Sir... I can't accept this."

"Yes, you can."

He smiled warmly.

"Because it isn't payment."

"It's gratitude."

Tears rolled down Elena's face.

Emily hugged her tightly.

"So..."

Richard continued.

"If you're willing..."

"I'd like you to stay."

"Not as our maid."

He glanced at Emily, who was already smiling through happy tears.

"But as part of our family."

Elena completely broke down.

For years she had hidden every tear.

Tonight...

She couldn't stop crying.

Emily wrapped both arms around her.

"I told you..."

"You were never going to leave me."

Outside...

The storm slowly began to fade.

For the first time in years, sunlight peeked through the clouds.

Richard placed one arm around Emily.

The other around Elena.

Standing together in the warm morning light, he finally understood a lesson that wealth had never been able to teach him.

A real family is not built by blood...

Nor by marriage...

Nor by money.

It is built by the people who choose to stay...

May you like

Especially when they have every reason to walk away.

The End.
