Chapter 3

From that night on, Elena became the quiet heartbeat of the Harrison mansion.
She never tried to replace Emily's mother.
She never asked the little girl to call her "Mom."
She simply showed up—every single day.
Every morning before sunrise, Elena gently knocked on Emily's bedroom door.
"Good morning, sunshine."
Emily would groan, burying her face beneath the blanket.
"Five more minutes..."
Elena laughed softly.
"That's exactly what you said yesterday."
Within minutes, breakfast was waiting.
Emily's school uniform was neatly pressed.
Her backpack was packed.
Her lunchbox always contained a tiny handwritten note.
"Smile today. You're braver than you think."
Emily kept every one of those notes inside a small wooden box hidden beneath her bed.
On difficult days at school, she secretly read them between classes.
They reminded her that someone was waiting for her to come home.
Someone who truly cared.
Richard remained constantly occupied with expanding his business across the world.
Whenever he called, Elena made sure Emily looked happy before handing her the phone.
"Daddy!"
Emily would smile.
"When are you coming home?"
Richard always answered with the same guilty promise.
"Soon, sweetheart."
"I promise."
Sometimes "soon" meant two weeks.
Sometimes two months.
Sometimes even longer.

Every time he hung up, Emily quietly stared at the dark phone screen.
She never complained.
Because she knew her father was working hard for her.
What she didn't know...
Was that Richard trusted Victoria completely.
Every report he received painted the picture of a perfect family.
Victoria never forgot to send carefully staged photographs.
Pictures of Emily smiling beside her.
Pictures of birthday parties Elena had actually organized.
Pictures of school projects Elena had stayed awake helping Emily finish.
Richard saw only the photographs.
He never saw who stood behind the camera.
One winter evening, Emily developed a dangerously high fever.
Her temperature climbed past 104 degrees.
The little girl shivered uncontrollably beneath thick blankets.
The servants panicked.
"Call Mrs. Harrison!"
one of them shouted.
Victoria answered after nearly ten minutes.
"What is it?"
"Ma'am, Miss Emily has a very high fever."
"So?"
"We think she should go to the hospital."
Victoria sighed impatiently.
"I'm having dinner with investors."
"Give her medicine."
Then she hung up.
The servants looked at each other in disbelief.
Without wasting another second, Elena wrapped Emily in a blanket and carried her through the pouring rain to the waiting car.
Emily was barely conscious.
She whispered weakly,
"...Elena..."
"I'm here."
Elena kissed the child's forehead.
"I won't leave you."
She stayed beside Emily's hospital bed for three straight days.
She barely slept.
Barely ate.
Every time Emily opened her eyes...
Elena was there.
Holding her hand.
Reading fairy tales.
Brushing the hair away from her forehead.
When Richard finally landed back in the country, Victoria greeted him at the airport with a warm smile.
"I'm so glad you're home."
"Emily had a tiny cold."
"But don't worry."
"I stayed with her the whole time."
Richard embraced his wife.
"Thank you."
Standing several feet behind them...
Elena quietly lowered her head.
She never corrected the lie.
She never wanted recognition.
She only wanted Emily to recover.
As the years passed...
Emily stopped calling for Victoria.
Not because anyone told her to.
Because experience had taught her the answer.
Whenever she was frightened...
She called Elena.
Whenever she had good news...
She ran to Elena first.
Whenever she cried...
She searched for Elena's embrace.
The servants noticed.
Even Richard occasionally noticed.
But Victoria always had an excuse.
"Emily is simply closer to the staff."
"It's just a phase."
Richard believed her.
Until one small accident changed everything.
Two weeks before that stormy night...
Richard returned home unexpectedly from a business trip three days early.
He wanted to surprise Emily.
Instead...
He was the one who received the surprise.
He entered the mansion quietly.
The house seemed unusually silent.
Then...
He heard sobbing.
Tiny...
Broken sobs.
He followed the sound upstairs.
The bedroom door was slightly open.
Inside...
Emily sat alone on the floor.
Her knees pulled tightly against her chest.
She was crying.
In front of her lay a family photo.
Richard...
Sarah...
And baby Emily.
The glass frame had cracked.
Richard slowly entered.
"Sweetheart?"
Emily quickly wiped away her tears.
"Daddy..."
"What happened?"
The little girl hesitated.
Then whispered,
"I miss Mommy."
Richard hugged her tightly.
"I know..."
"But why are you crying alone?"
Emily looked toward the hallway.
"I didn't want to bother Victoria."
"She said crying gives her headaches."
Richard froze.
"What?"
Emily innocently continued,
"So... I wait until she's gone before I cry."
Those simple words hit Richard harder than any business loss he had ever suffered.
He asked another question.
"Where's Elena?"
Emily smiled through her tears.
"She's making soup for me."
Only seconds later...
Elena appeared carrying a warm bowl.
The moment she saw Richard...
She stopped.
"Sir... I didn't know you were home."
Richard looked at her.
Then at Emily.
Then back again.
For the very first time...
He noticed something he had ignored for years.
Every drawing in Emily's room included Elena.
Every school certificate carried Elena's signature instead of Victoria's.
Every birthday photo showed Elena standing just outside the frame.
Always close enough to help.
Never close enough to receive credit.
That night...
Richard didn't sleep.
Instead...
He quietly reviewed three years of security footage, school records, hospital documents, and household reports.
The truth unfolded hour after hour.
Every lie.
Every absence.
Every sacrifice.
Every moment Elena had silently become the mother Emily desperately needed.
And by sunrise...
Richard had already made his decision.
He ordered the staff to pack one person's belongings.
Not Elena's.
Victoria's.
When she confidently announced that the maid should leave forever...
May you like
She had no idea...
She had just signed the end of her own life inside the Harrison family.
