Chapter 1

Rain pounded against the windows.

The Harrison family home had always felt warm on afternoons like this.

Today...

It felt colder than the storm outside.

Robert Harrison quietly unlocked the front door.

His business trip had ended a day early.

A small black suitcase rolled behind him as he stepped inside, expecting the familiar smell of Eleanor's homemade soup.

Instead...

He heard laughter.

Loud.

Carefree.

Cruel.

His smile faded.

The laughter wasn't coming from his wife.

It came from the kitchen.

Robert set his suitcase down without making a sound.

Then he noticed something that stopped him cold.

Eleanor was kneeling alone on the living room rug.

Her shoulders shook violently.

Legal papers were scattered around her.

Mascara streaked her cheeks.

She looked as though someone had broken her heart.

Robert rushed toward her.

"Eleanor..."

She looked up.

The moment she saw him...

She burst into tears.

"Robert..."

She threw her arms around him, unable to speak.

He held her tightly.

His eyes drifted toward the papers lying across the floor.

Power of Attorney.

Property Transfer Agreement.

Bank Authorization.

His heartbeat quickened.

"What is this?"

Eleanor's hands trembled as she gathered the documents and placed them in his hands.

"They..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

"They tried to make me sign everything away."

Robert slowly looked through the pages.

Every document transferred control of their house...

Their savings...

Their retirement accounts...

Everything...

To their son, Ethan.

His jaw tightened.

Just then...

More laughter echoed from the kitchen.

Robert remained perfectly still.

He listened.

Ethan's voice carried clearly through the open floor plan.

"Dad will never find out."

Everyone laughed.

Chelsea laughed.

Her parents, Marlene and Greg, laughed too.

Robert felt something inside him break.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Disappointment.

The kind only a father could feel.

He had spent forty years building a business.

Thirty-eight years teaching his son about honesty.

Apparently...

Neither lesson had mattered.

Eleanor grabbed his arm.

"Please..."

"Don't make this worse."

Robert looked at her swollen eyes.

"They've been pressuring you while I was gone?"

She nodded.

"For three days."

"They kept saying it was just paperwork."

"They said you already agreed."

Robert closed his eyes for a moment.

He had never agreed to anything.

They had lied.

Not only to him.

To his wife.

The woman who had stood beside him for forty-five years.

He carefully stacked the papers.

Smoothed the wrinkled corners.

Then calmly walked toward the kitchen.

Inside...

Ethan leaned comfortably against the marble island, sipping coffee.

Chelsea smiled as Marlene joked about remodeling the house.

Greg nodded approvingly.

None of them noticed Robert until he stepped into the room.

The laughter stopped instantly.

Coffee mugs froze halfway to their lips.

Ethan slowly turned around.

His face drained of color.

"Dad..."

Robert placed the legal documents flat on the marble countertop.

The sound echoed through the silent kitchen.

He looked at every person in the room.

One by one.

Then he spoke in a voice so calm it was terrifying.

"Nobody moves."

No one dared breathe.

Because in that moment...

May you like

Everyone realized the man they thought would never find out...

Had heard everything.
