Chapter 4

Claire sat silently in Arthur Hale's office, staring at the document placed in front of her.
For several minutes, she didn't say a word.
Not because she didn't understand.
Because she understood too well.
The signature.
The access codes.
The private documents.
Someone close to her had helped Mason.
Someone who knew her habits.
Someone who knew where she kept important files.
Someone who knew how much she trusted them.
Arthur watched her carefully.
"Claire."
She looked up.
"Who?"
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
He turned the document toward her.
"The first unauthorized transfer was submitted from a computer registered to Bennett Holdings."
Claire frowned.
"My father's company."
"Yes."
"That doesn't prove anything."
"No."
Arthur nodded.
"But the login credentials used belonged to one person."
Claire stared.
"Who?"
Arthur took a breath.
"Richard Bennett."
Her father's name.
Again.
The room became completely silent.
Claire looked down.
She had prepared herself for Mason.
She had prepared herself for Linda.
But Richard was different.
Her father was the person who taught her that integrity mattered.
The person who brought her to her first business meeting.
The person who told her:
"A person's reputation is built by the choices they make when nobody is watching."
Now she wondered.
Had he believed his own words?
Or had they only been meant for other people?
Arthur continued.
"We need to be careful."
Claire looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because your father didn't directly transfer the money into his own accounts."
"Then why?"
"Because he authorized access."
Claire understood.
"He protected Mason."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Arthur looked at the files.
"That is the question."
That evening, Claire returned to the Bennett family home.
The same house where she had spent every Christmas.
The same dining room where they took family photos.
The same living room where everyone smiled for appearances.
But now every corner looked different.
She walked inside.
Linda was sitting near the fireplace wearing an expensive red holiday dress.
Her pearl necklace reflected the warm lights.
She looked calm.
Almost offended.
"I knew you would come back."
Claire removed her coat.
"I didn't come back."
Linda frowned.
"I came for answers."
A small smile disappeared from Linda's face.
"You've been talking to that attorney."
"Yes."
Linda sighed.
"Claire, you need to understand something."
"No."
Claire's voice was calm.
"You need to understand something."
Linda looked surprised.
Claire walked closer.
"For years, I listened."
She placed her handbag on the table.
"I listened when you told me Mason needed help."
"I listened when Dad said the company needed support."
"I listened when everyone explained why my sacrifices were necessary."
Her eyes hardened.
"But nobody listened when I was hurt."
Linda's expression changed.
"That's not fair."
Claire almost smiled.
"That word again."
"What?"
"Fair."
She shook her head.
"Everyone talks about fairness after they lose control."
Linda stood.
"You are angry."
"No."
Claire looked directly at her.
"I'm disappointed."
That hurt Linda more.
Anger could be argued with.
Disappointment couldn't.
Richard entered the room.
He had clearly been listening.
"Claire."
She turned.
"Dad."
His expression was serious.
"You need to stop before this goes too far."
Claire looked at him.
"Too far?"
"You don't know all the details."
"Then tell me."
Silence.
"Tell me why my signature was used."
Richard looked away.
That was the answer.
Claire nodded slowly.
"I spent years thinking you were protecting me."
Richard's voice lowered.
"I was protecting the family."
The sentence broke something inside her.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
"The family."
She repeated.
"Not me."
"Claire..."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I understand now."
Richard looked at her.
"Understand what?"
"That every time someone said family comes first..."
A pause.
"...they meant I should come last."
Mason suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs.
He looked exhausted.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Claire looked up.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
"No, you don't."
He walked down.
"You think you're exposing us, but you're hurting everyone."
Claire stared at him.
"Everyone?"
"Yes."
"You mean you."
Mason stopped.
"The company."
"The company survived before me."
"Not anymore."
Claire noticed something.
The fear in his voice wasn't about family.
It was about losing control.
"You knew."
Mason looked away.
"Knew what?"
"That the company was failing."
Silence.
"You weren't investing my money."
She stepped closer.
"You were covering losses."
Mason didn't answer.
Claire looked at her father.
"And you approved it."
Richard closed his eyes.
The next morning, Arthur called Claire before she arrived at work.
His voice was urgent.
"We found the complete transaction history."
Claire sat at her desk.
"What did you find?"
"The money wasn't only used for company expenses."
Her expression tightened.
"Where did it go?"
Arthur paused.
"Luxury purchases."
"Whose?"
Another pause.
"Mason's."
Claire closed her eyes.
She expected it.
But expecting betrayal didn't make it hurt less.
Arthur continued.
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"The bank contacted us."
Claire sat straighter.
"Why?"
"Because Mason attempted to access the remaining funds again."
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"He tried again?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Arthur's voice became serious.
"Using a new authorization document."
Claire felt cold.
"What authorization document?"
A pause.
"One with your signature."
Claire stood from her chair.
Enough.
For years, they had mistaken her kindness for weakness.
They believed because she forgave them before...
She always would.
They were wrong.
"Arthur."
"Yes?"
"I want to file a formal complaint."
A moment of silence.
"Are you sure?"
Claire looked around her office.
At the career she built.
The life she created.
The independence they never gave her.
"Yes."
"Against your family?"
Claire answered without hesitation.
"Against anyone who used my identity."
Arthur remained silent.
Then he replied:
"Understood."
That afternoon, Claire received another call.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice responded.
"Ms. Bennett?"
"Yes."
"This is the fraud investigation department at First National Bank."
Claire's heart tightened.
"How can I help you?"
The woman hesitated.
"We need to confirm something regarding a transfer request submitted yesterday."
Claire stood.
"What transfer request?"
The woman lowered her voice.
"A request to move ownership of your company shares."
Claire froze.
"My company shares?"
"Yes."
"Who submitted it?"
A pause.
Then:
"Your brother."
Claire looked toward the window.
Outside, Chicago continued under the winter sky.
But inside her office, everything became clear.
Mason wasn't just trying to take money.
He was trying to take her future.

And this time...
Claire was ready.
