Chapter 3

The next morning, Claire Bennett walked into the Bennett corporate office with a completely different presence.

Three weeks earlier, she had entered every family meeting hoping to keep peace.

Today, she entered knowing the truth.

The marble lobby looked exactly the same.

The employees smiled politely.

The receptionist greeted her.

The Christmas decorations still hung around the entrance.

But Claire no longer saw a family company.

She saw a place where secrets had been hidden.

A place where her trust had been turned into a weakness.

She stepped into the private elevator.

As the doors closed, she looked at her reflection.

The woman staring back at her was still the same.

Same face.

Same career.

Same intelligence.

But something had changed.

She was no longer asking for permission to protect herself.

Arthur Hale had spent the entire night reviewing the documents.

By 8:00 a.m., Claire was sitting across from him again.

This time, there were more files.

More evidence.

More questions.

"I need you to understand something," Arthur said.

Claire looked up.

"Your brother didn't act alone."

Her expression remained calm.

"Who else?"

Arthur opened a folder.

"Your parents."

The answer still hurt.

Even though she had expected it.

Claire looked down.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"My father?"

Arthur hesitated.

"Your father appears to have known about the transfers."

Claire slowly leaned back.

For years, Richard Bennett had been the person everyone respected.

A successful businessman.

A disciplined leader.

A man who taught his children that reputation mattered.

But now she understood.

He cared more about protecting the family image than protecting her.

"What did they do?"

Arthur pointed toward the documents.

"Your mother approved several payments from the family account."

"For Mason?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

Arthur slid the report toward her.

Claire scanned the numbers.

Hundreds of thousands.

Luxury purchases.

Private expenses.

Debt payments.

Everything connected to Mason.

Her brother had not simply taken money.

He had built a lifestyle around the belief that Claire would always cover the consequences.

A memory came back.

Christmas Eve.

The previous year.

Mason had laughed while opening a gift Claire bought him.

"Another expensive watch?"

Claire smiled.

"You said you liked it."

He had looked at their parents.

"Claire always goes overboard."

Everyone laughed.

Everyone except Claire.

Because she remembered the conversation from two weeks earlier.

Mason had called her.

"I need help."

Again.

Always those words.

"I just need a temporary loan."

Temporary.

Another word that had become meaningless.

She had transferred money.

No questions asked.

Because she loved him.

Because he was family.

Because she believed someday they would do the same for her.

Now she understood.

They never planned to.

Claire arrived at Bennett Holdings just after lunch.

The employees noticed immediately.

There was something different about her.

She wasn't rushing.

She wasn't smiling politely.

She wasn't apologizing for taking up space.

She walked directly to the executive floor.

Her father was already waiting.

Richard Bennett stood near his office window wearing a navy blazer and glasses.

He didn't look surprised.

"You found out."

Claire stopped.

That was all he said.

Not hello.

Not are you okay.

Not I'm sorry.

Just confirmation.

She slowly entered the office.

"You knew."

Richard remained silent.

"How long?"

He looked away.

"Claire."

"How long?"

His jaw tightened.

"Almost two years."

The answer landed harder than she expected.

Two years.

Two years of conversations.

Two years of family dinners.

Two years of pretending everything was normal.

"You watched him use my name."

"It wasn't supposed to happen this way."

Claire almost laughed.

"That's your explanation?"

"Your brother was struggling."

"He stole from me."

"He made mistakes."

"Mistakes?"

Her voice remained controlled.

But the disappointment was obvious.

"He transferred millions of dollars using my signature."

Richard sighed.

"You don't understand the pressure he was under."

Claire stared at him.

"No."

A pause.

"I understand perfectly."

Richard walked toward his desk.

"Mason was trying to save the company."

"By taking my inheritance?"

"The family needed support."

Claire looked around the office.

At the expensive furniture.

The framed awards.

The company logo on the wall.

"The family always needs support."

Her father looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"It means everyone in this family knows how to ask me for something."

Silence.

"But nobody ever asks what it costs me."

Richard's expression hardened.

"You are being emotional."

Claire smiled faintly.

There it was.

The same phrase.

The same dismissal.

Whenever she questioned anything.

"You know what's interesting?"

"What?"

"For years, whenever I disagreed, everyone said I was emotional."

She stepped closer.

"But whenever Mason made a bad decision, everyone said he was under pressure."

Richard had no answer.

The office door suddenly opened.

Mason walked in.

He looked exhausted.

The confident businessman from Christmas Eve was gone.

His expensive sweater and designer coat couldn't hide the panic in his eyes.

"Claire."

She turned.

"Mason."

"We need to talk."

"No."

He stopped.

"What?"

"We needed to talk before you forged my signature."

His face changed.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"You don't know what happened."

"I know you used my identity."

Mason looked at their father.

"Tell her."

Richard remained silent.

That silence answered everything.

Mason's frustration exploded.

"You think I wanted this?"

Claire watched him carefully.

"No."

He looked surprised.

"I think you wanted the benefits."

His expression froze.

"You wanted the money."

"That's not fair."

"Fair?"

Claire repeated the word softly.

"The person who had millions taken from them is asking about fairness?"

Mason stepped closer.

"I was going to pay it back."

"When?"

He didn't answer.

"When everything worked out?"

Silence.

Claire nodded.

"That's what everyone always says."

Mason lowered his voice.

"Claire, we're family."

The words almost sounded desperate.

She looked at him.

For years, that sentence controlled her.

Today, it didn't.

"You're right."

Mason seemed relieved.

Then she continued.

"We are family."

A pause.

"Which is why what you did hurts more."

His expression changed.

Claire looked at both of them.

"My mistake was believing family meant I had no boundaries."

She picked up the legal folder Arthur had given her.

"I was wrong."

Mason's voice became nervous.

"What are you going to do?"

Claire looked at him.

For the first time, he seemed afraid of her.

"I'm going to find out exactly what happened."

A pause.

"And I'm going to make sure it never happens again."

She turned toward the door.

Behind her, Mason called out.

"Claire."

She stopped.

"Do you really want to destroy your own family?"

Claire didn't turn around.

Her answer was quiet.

"No."

A pause.

"I want to stop them from destroying me."

She walked away.

But as she reached the hallway, her phone rang.

Arthur Hale.

She answered.

"Yes?"

His voice was serious.

"Claire, we found something else."

She stopped walking.

"What?"

A long silence.

Then Arthur spoke.

"The signature used on the first transfer..."

Claire waited.

"It wasn't copied."

Her heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur lowered his voice.

"It means someone had access to your personal documents."

Claire looked back toward her father's office.

"Who?"

Arthur answered carefully.

"We need to discuss that in person."

"Why?"

"Because the person who helped your brother..."

A pause.

"...was someone you trusted completely."

Claire stood frozen in the hallway.

May you like

And suddenly...

The betrayal became much deeper than money.
