Chapter 9 - What Ethan Heard Before Dinner

Ethan requested to speak with me from detention.

I refused.

Then his attorney delivered a letter claiming he had recorded Vivian and Harlan because he intended to protect me.

The recorder in his jacket was proof, he said.

He wanted credit for evidence he never used.

Nora compared the timestamps.

Ethan heard the conversation at four twelve.

At four thirty, he activated Vivian’s access to my hospital chart.

At five ten, he approved the Lakeside transfer.

At six, he signed the psychiatric statement.

At nine, he stood in the hallway while Grant struck me.

The recorder did not prove protection.

It proved knowledge.

I agreed to a recorded interview with police present.

Ethan appeared on a screen from the detention facility. His face looked gray under the fluorescent light.

“Why did you record them?”

“I did not trust Harlan.”

“But you followed the plan.”

“I thought the recorder would protect us if something went wrong.”

“Something went wrong when they discussed my death.”

“I believed Mom was exaggerating.”

“Grant punched my stomach.”

“I did not know he would do that.”

“You knew he was there to scare me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I had been drugged into labor.”

“No.”

“You approved the hospital transfer before dinner.”

“Mom said it was a backup.”

Every answer moved responsibility one chair away.

Vivian.

Harlan.

Grant.

The lender.

The company.

Never Ethan.

I asked one final question.

“When Lily disappeared, why did you take her to Lakeside?”

He looked down.

“Harlan said the trust transfer would protect her from Mom.”

“You helped replace her identity with another infant.”

“I did not know about that until the roof.”

“You still carried our baby into a helicopter suite.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

He began crying.

I felt nothing that required me to comfort him.

Detective Shaw ended the interview after Ethan admitted using the paramedic as a substitute in the hospital holding room. The paramedic, Lucas Dane, had received fifty thousand dollars and a promise of work at Cole Family Health.

Lucas cooperated after learning Vivian planned to blame him for the entire kidnapping.

He provided the private planning chat.

The group included Vivian, Harlan, Ethan, Grant, and one unidentified user called W.

W approved the fake court seal, selected the hospital timing, and instructed Harlan to prepare a second infant.

Nora searched the records.

The login came from inside Hawthorne Medical Properties.

Someone connected to my mother’s trust had helped them.

The trust administrator, Walter Crane, had served my family for nineteen years. He was the person who called me after my mother died, explained the shares, and promised no one could take them.

Walter denied involvement.

Then the planning chat displayed a phrase he used in every trust meeting.

Continuity protects the innocent from emotional decisions.

Police searched his office.

They found copies of my prenatal records, Lily’s projected birth date, and a list of hospitals where the trust owned land.

Northwestern was selected because the emergency coercion clause would trigger there.

My mother had written the clause to protect me from exactly this kind of attack.

Walter turned it into a map.

He had also arranged the lender agreement with Cole Medical Development. If Vivian gained temporary control, he received a percentage of every extended lease.

If Harlan gained control, Walter became coadministrator.

Every path paid him.

Walter disappeared before officers arrived.

His computer remained logged into the trust portal.

A final command was waiting.

Terminate maternal authority due to physical incapacity.

The system requested medical proof that I could not serve as trustee.

Someone had uploaded postoperative scans showing internal bleeding.

The scans were real.

Dr. Bennett reviewed them and entered my room within minutes.

“You have a serious complication.”

“I feel fine.”

“That is common before sudden deterioration.”

The assault and surgery had caused a slow internal bleed near the uterine artery.

I needed another operation.

If I became unconscious, the trust command could activate.

Walter had timed his request around a medical condition I did not yet know existed.

Nora froze the portal again, but the system required the trust administrator’s physical key to cancel the command permanently.

Walter had taken it.

My phone displayed a message from an unknown number.

Come alone to Hawthorne Tower if you want Lily to remain yours.

A photograph followed.

Walter stood inside my mother’s old office holding the physical trust key.

Behind him, a wall screen displayed the live surgical schedule.

Continue to the next part: Olivia must enter emergency surgery while Walter holds the only key capable of stopping the final transfer of Lily’s trust.
