Chapter 6 - The Empty Warming Bed

I tried to sit up.
Pain tore through the incision and forced me back.
“Where is she?”
Rachel held my shoulders.
“Security is searching.”
“Where is Lily?”
The operating room doors were sealed. The man in transport clothing had escaped through a service corridor during the blackout. The officer outside had been struck with a metal oxygen wrench.
A second nurse disappeared at the same time.
The hospital tracking bracelet placed on Lily after birth showed no signal.
Someone had removed it inside the corridor.
Dr. Bennett ordered medication for my blood pressure, but I refused anything sedating.
“You just had major surgery.”
“My daughter is missing.”
Nora entered wearing a sterile gown over her suit.
“Police found the transport incubator in the freight elevator. It was empty.”
“Vivian.”
“She is still in the legal holding room.”
“Ethan?”
“Under guard.”
“Dr. Harlan?”
No one answered immediately.
Harlan had disappeared after his hospital access froze.
His car remained in the garage.
The emergency blackout was triggered from a maintenance terminal inside the private maternity wing. Harlan’s badge opened the terminal room thirty seconds before the lights failed.
He had taken Lily.
Or helped someone do it.
Nora opened the Cole Medical Development files. Ethan’s midnight loan agreement contained a final condition no one had noticed.
The maternal trust required proof of live birth and temporary custody recognition before the lender released bridge funding.
A hospital birth certificate.
A newborn identification record.
A physician statement naming Ethan as the responsible parent while I remained incapable.
They did not need to keep Lily permanently.
They needed control long enough to complete the documents.
At 11:46 p.m., a birth record was filed electronically.
Mother: Olivia Mercer.
Father: Ethan Cole.
Responsible guardian: Vivian Cole.
Medical status of mother: unconscious and psychiatrically unstable.
My daughter had been alive for eleven minutes, and they had already rewritten her first legal record.
Nora filed an emergency challenge, but the trust system still required verification from the hospital.
Someone attempted to upload the guardian confirmation.
The user name belonged to Dr. Harlan.
The source terminal was inside Lakeside Maternal Recovery.
The same private facility that sent the transport team earlier.
Police surrounded the building.
I demanded to go.
Dr. Bennett refused.
“You will reopen the incision.”
“Then move me in an ambulance.”
Nora looked at the monitor, then at me.
“We can take the secure medical transport with a surgical nurse.”
Twenty minutes later, I entered Lakeside on a hospital stretcher with Rachel beside me and police ahead.
The building looked more like a luxury hotel than a maternity center. Soft lighting. Cream walls. No public patients.
The reception desk was empty.
A security camera showed Harlan entering with a covered infant carrier.
He was not alone.
Ethan walked beside him.
The man under guard at Northwestern was not Ethan.
Police checked the holding room.
The suspect carried Ethan’s identification and wore his jacket, but his face had been partly hidden after claiming an injury.
He was the paramedic who administered the labor drug.
Ethan had exchanged clothing with him during the fire alarm.
My husband had been inside the hospital plan from beginning to end.
We found Harlan in a records room beside a printer producing trust documents.
He surrendered immediately.
“Ethan took the baby upstairs.”
“Why did you help him?”
“Vivian promised to save the hospital partnership.”
“You drugged me.”
“I followed a maternal crisis protocol.”
“You created the crisis.”
He looked away.
Police searched the second floor.
A nursery door stood open.
Inside were three bassinets.
Only one held a baby.
I reached for the blanket.
Rachel stopped me.
The infant was not Lily.
A second birth bracelet carried my name, but the blood type did not match mine or Ethan’s.
Someone had prepared another newborn to leave under Lily’s identity.
From the floor above came the sound of a baby crying.
Then Ethan’s voice through the building speaker.
May you like
“Stop the police, Olivia, or I take her where you will never find us.”
Continue to the next part: Ethan threatens to disappear with Lily while another infant has already been prepared to replace her in the official records.
