Chapter 21 - Daniel Hart

At forty one, I changed my name back.
Not entirely.
Daniel Hart Whitmore legally.
Hart restored.
Whitmore kept.
People asked why both.
“Because Lily is Whitmore.”
That was enough.
Lily loved it.
“Can I be Lily Whitmore Hart?”
“You can when you’re older if you want.”
“No, yours is cooler.”
“Excellent legal basis.”
She laughed.
The change was not revenge against Claire.
She supported.
“It fits.”
I asked:
“What?”
“You stopped disappearing into us.”
That was true.
I had taken Whitmore surname because I thought love meant merging.
Now I understood healthy families have edges.
My own identity mattered.
So did shared one.
Hart Whitmore.
Both.
At school, Lily did a family tree project.
She included:
Me.
Claire.
Thomas and Patricia.
My parents, who had been quiet background grandparents in Ohio. Ah! We never mentioned Daniel’s parents. Could include now carefully: my father deceased? Let's avoid introducing too much. Could say she included "the Hart side" from records, no specifics. Fine.
She asked whether to include Marcus.
“That’s your choice.”
“He’s still Mom’s brother.”
“Yes.”
She drew him.
No line of contact.
Interesting.
Then she drew Patricia.
Small.
At edge.
Still family.
May you like
Not safe family.
That distinction was hers.
