Chapter 21 - Co-Parenting Without Rewriting the Marriage

The first year was difficult.

Not dramatic.

Schedules.

Sleep.

Breastfeeding.

Work.

Ethan’s apartment twenty minutes away.

He had three evenings a week initially and increasing overnights as Elise grew, consistent with infant needs and our agreement.

No custody war.

No allegation I was keeping him away.

No attempt by Ethan to leverage Lydia.

He complied with court restriction:

Lydia had no contact.

Frank could see Elise independently.

He did.

He became ridiculous grandfather.

Tiny dresses.

Books.

A wooden rocking horse Elise ignored in favor of cardboard box.

Ethan’s therapy continued.

He stopped asking me whether we might reconcile.

That helped.

At Elise’s first birthday, he arrived early to set up.

I said:

“You don’t have to.”

“I’m her father.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why.”

Good answer.

He cleaned after.

Left.

No emotional ambush.

Consistency did what apologies could not.

It rebuilt respect.

May you like

Not marriage.

Respect.
