Chapter 19 - My Mother’s Necklace

I stared at request.

“That necklace was missing.”

Sophia nodded.

“Victoria says she found it on staircase after ambulance.”

“And kept?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She says evidence? Sentimental? Her attorney wasn’t clear.”

Rage returned faster than expected.

My mother’s necklace.

The one thing I clutched falling.

I had searched hospital belongings.

Mansion inventory.

Police evidence.

Gone.

Victoria had it.

I did not need meet to retrieve.

Attorney could transfer.

I chose that.

No meeting.

A courier delivered small velvet box.

Sapphire necklace.

Clasp broken.

Blood? Cleaned. Small scratch.

I cried.

Then a letter.

Audrey,

I picked it up because it was lying near stairs.

Then:

At first I intended return.

Then:

I kept it because I knew it mattered to you and I was angry.

There.

Not accident.

Another form of control.

Then:

After arrest, I was ashamed to admit.

Then prison.

Then:

Keeping it became another lie.

She wrote:

I am sorry.

I wore it once.

That sentence almost made me sick.

Then:

I took it off because I saw you in mirror.

I closed letter.

Thomas asked:

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

I had necklace repaired.

I wore it again eventually.

Not immediately.

Then prosecutor? Theft statute maybe expired/low value? We informed attorney, but no need prosecute; it was returned. I declined civil action. Not because forgiving. Enough.

Then I wrote Victoria one letter.

I received the necklace.

Do not contact me again.

Audrey.

She complied.

Then Dominic learned perhaps through Victoria. He sent no message.

Good.

Then one day Claire, Thomas’s daughter, asked about necklace.

“Your mom?”

“Yes.”

“Can Nora have someday?”

I thought.

“If she wants and I choose.”

Claire smiled.

“Good answer.”

Nothing automatic.

Then Dominic’s relationship with Victoria.

Limited monthly lunch.

No money management.

No company talk.

Dana insisted.

Good.

Then Mason, Dominic’s stepson, became teenager.

Dominic coached baseball? Fine.

He never tried force Vance succession.

Maybe his biggest growth.

At a shareholder meeting, another investor proposed Dominic return as advisory board due experience.

Dominic declined.

He wrote statement:

My history with company creates unnecessary governance conflict. I support professional leadership.

I saw.

No need response.

Then Thomas and I updated estate.

Nora would inherit some assets through trust.

Claire also included in Thomas’s estate and some from me as chosen stepdaughter gifts.

No company throne.

Employee stake protected.

Aster Vale would eventually diversify.

Then my own $80 million trust? By now maybe much larger, but don't number. We restructured philanthropy.

No one child automatic control.

Then one final legal paper.

All criminal supervision for Dominic, Paige, Victoria complete.

Restitution satisfied.

No open appeals.

Divorce closed.

Company claims settled.

Police evidence retention ended.

Sophia asked:

“Do you want staircase footage copy destroyed?”

I had kept.

Why?

Proof.

But truth no longer needed me to guard.

“Destroy.”

She did.

Then Sarah Collins wrote me at Christmas.

She had opened her own housekeeping management company.

Thank you for believing me when I told truth.

I wrote:

You believed yourself first.

Good.

Then years later, Dominic’s mother became ill.

Not terminal immediately.

He asked through Sophia if I wanted to know.

I said:

“No updates unless there is something legally relevant.”

Not cruelty.

Boundary.

Then Nora found old wedding ring in safe.

“Who’s this from?”

I looked.

Dominic.

I had never sold.

Why keep?

History.

I said:

“My first husband.”

“Do you love him?”

Children.

I answered:

“I loved him once.”

“Now?”

“I wish him well.”

She accepted.

Then:

“Can I wear ring?”

“No.”

May you like

She rolled eyes.

Some boundaries simple.
