Chapter 14 - Victoria’s Sentence
I did not ask court to sentence Victoria for my miscarriage as if she knew.
I said:
“She did not know I was pregnant.”
The prosecutor had already agreed.
Then:
“She did know stairs were behind me.”
That was enough.
I described head.
Shoulder.
Pregnancy loss.
Fear.
Then:
“She spent years telling me I was lucky to be accepted into her family.”
I looked at Victoria.
“When I said I was leaving, she used her hands to decide I was not allowed to leave with dignity.”
Then:
“I want sentence for what she did, not for what people think she deserves because she is cruel.”
Judge listened.
Victoria spoke.
At first:
“I never intended.”
Then stopped.
Her lawyer whispered.
She looked at me.
“I pushed you.”
First admission.
Court quiet.
“I was angry.”
Then:
“I thought you had lied to us.”
About money.
“I thought you were going to humiliate Dominic.”
Then:
“I thought one push would make you stop.”
Same logic.
Fear as correction.
Then pregnancy.
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t know.”
I believed.
“I am sorry.”
Not reconciliation.
But true.
Judge sentenced six years active incarceration followed by supervision, considering serious injury, pregnancy loss consequence, obstruction, lack of prior criminal record, age, eventual admission.
Dominic sentencing came later on obstruction plea.
He received eleven months active custody followed by supervised release, plus company/civil penalties and no executive fiduciary role for set period.
Some might think too little.
Some too much.
It reflected different conduct.
He did not push.
He did help conceal.
Then Paige received probation, restitution, and professional restrictions under cooperation plea.
No prison.
Again different.
The law separated.
Then board.
Vance Construction hired permanent CEO: Claire Benton.
No family relation.
Twenty years construction finance/operations.
I did not take CEO seat.
Aster Vale remained majority shareholder.
I took one board seat personally for first time, alongside independent directors.
Then I stepped away from daily governance.
The company changed name?
Not yet.
Dominic still owned Vance shares.
Employees knew brand.
No need erase family name because one family member failed.
Then foundation repaid questionable expenditures.
Victoria’s compensation/personal assets covered ordered amounts.
Paige vendor issue resolved.
Company profitable.
Then an internal question:
Should Dominic ever return?
Board policy said no executive role during supervision, future subject board.
I voted? Conflict. I recused.
Years later maybe.
Then grief.
I had focused on law so long I had barely mourned child.
After Victoria sentencing, I went home and found hospital bracelet in drawer.
I sat on bathroom floor.
Cried until morning.
Not because verdict.
Because I had been eight weeks pregnant.
I had never named child.
Never heard heartbeat knowingly.
Never bought anything.
Still loss.
Therapist said:
“You do not need duration to justify grief.”
I knew intellectually.
Body learned slower.
Then Dominic sent letter from custody.
I did not open for a month.
When I finally did, first line was:
I know my infertility is not punishment for what I did.
