Chapter 4 - THE FLIGHT MY FATHER NEVER CHOSE

The military reopened my father’s crash investigation under independent federal supervision.
General Keene was temporarily suspended.
He called the action political theater.
He refused to surrender his private devices until a court order forced him.
Major Price remained missing.
The old flight records showed Robert’s helicopter was scheduled to follow a northern test route.
Twenty minutes before departure, the navigation system received a remote update.
The route shifted toward a mountain corridor where severe weather had already been reported.
The authorization came from David Keene’s command terminal.
Keene claimed Robert requested the change.
No recording supported him.
The aircraft mechanic who signed the final inspection had died nine years earlier.
His widow still possessed a notebook he kept privately.
One entry read:
COLONEL HALE REFUSED ROUTE CHANGE.
GENERAL K OVERRULED.
DATA UNIT REMOVED BEFORE FIRE.
My father had not flown accidentally into danger.
He had been directed there.
Federal divers later recovered part of the helicopter frame from a military storage reservoir. The wreckage had been moved after the original investigation.
A section of the navigation bay showed deliberate tampering.
Someone replaced a redundant control component with an uncertified part.
The failure trapped the crew inside the altered route.
I sat beside Sophia while Mara explained the findings.
Leo remained in intensive care, but his fever had fallen. His breathing improved after antibiotics and the sedatives left his bloodstream.
Sophia had been examined separately.
She had two cracked ribs, bruising across her arms and back, dehydration, and traces of the same medication found in Leo’s bottle.
“They drugged you too.”
“Only when I fought the door.”
“How many times?”
“I do not know.”
She looked toward our son.
“I started hiding the milk they brought me. Then they stopped bringing enough water.”
I had seen war.
I had entered buildings where families survived impossible cruelty.
Yet I had left Sophia inside a home with people carrying my name.
That knowledge produced a different kind of guilt.
“I should have returned sooner.”
“You returned when you had enough evidence to bring help.”
“I should have known before the camera.”
“You called every day.”
“And accepted Eleanor’s answers.”
Sophia looked at me.
“That is what you need to examine. Not why I could not escape three adults while holding a newborn.”
She refused to let my guilt become the center of her injuries.
The distinction hurt.
It also kept responsibility where it belonged.
Audrey agreed to provide full cooperation after prosecutors showed her the attempted kidnapping charge.
She revealed that Keene visited Eleanor throughout my childhood.
Robert knew.
Their marriage had been collapsing before the crash.
Eleanor told Audrey that Robert planned to divorce her, remove her from the trust, and expose Keene’s sale of military data.
“What did your mother say after Robert died?” Morgan asked.
“That he made his choice.”
“What choice?”
“To fly.”
Audrey began crying.
“She said men who cared more about honor than family deserved lonely funerals.”
Eleanor denied everything.
She claimed Audrey fabricated the affair to save herself.
Then investigators recovered letters from Keene inside Eleanor’s foundation office.
One had been written three weeks before my father’s death.
AFTER THE TEST, ROBERT WILL NO LONGER CONTROL WHAT BELONGS TO US.
Another letter appeared after the crash.
LUCAS MUST NEVER LEARN WHY THE ROUTE CHANGED.
HE WILL NEED A FATHER.
Keene had not helped me after Robert died from loyalty.
He had positioned himself inside the family he helped destroy.
My military career placed me near classified systems and company contracts.
He promoted me because my success strengthened Hale Tactical’s value.
When I refused to sell to Argent, he chose another route.
Report me dead.
Remove Sophia.
Control Leo.
Daniel opened a second section of the Hale trust.
The company owned a patented navigation correction system called Sentinel.
It could detect and reject unauthorized route changes.
My father created it after discovering Keene’s data diversion.
The full patent transferred to Leo upon his birth.
Argent did not only want company shares.
It wanted Sentinel before the military adopted it across the fleet.
Mara’s phone rang.
Major Price had used a stolen vehicle near a private medical warehouse outside Fort Sheridan.
Federal agents surrounded the building.
Inside, they found forged casualty forms for six other service members.
Each soldier possessed valuable insurance, land, company shares, or intellectual property.
Three had died during questionable training incidents.
Two had been declared mentally unfit after returning home.
The sixth was still alive in a military hospital.
His wife had disappeared four months earlier.
A photograph showed her entering Eleanor’s Gold Star Foundation office.
On the back, someone had written:
