Chapter 5 - THE FILE MICHAEL HID FOR HIS DAUGHTER
The medical examiner compared Michael’s preserved samples with the substance found inside Alessandro’s coffee.
The same uncommon medication appeared in both.
Michael’s level had been far higher.
The result changed the classification of his death from presumed accident to suspicious.
It did not automatically identify who administered the substance.
The financial files helped establish the surrounding motive.
Michael had hidden a cloud folder under Emma’s name.
Sophia found the password clue inside the lining of the gray rabbit.
The toy had belonged to Michael when he was a child. Before his death, he repaired one torn seam and placed a small paper strip inside.
Sophia had never noticed it.
The password opened a folder containing vendor invoices, shipping records, recorded meetings, and photographs of empty warehouses listed as medical equipment suppliers.
Michael also recorded a statement.
“If anything happens to me, the invoices were approved through Julian Duca’s office. I reported them internally. My access was suspended the next morning.”
His voice sounded exhausted.
He did not say Julian planned to kill him.
He said he feared evidence would disappear.
The folder included one audio call with Julian.
“You have a wife and a baby,” Julian said. “Do not turn an accounting disagreement into something your family regrets.”
Michael answered:
“Is that a threat?”
“It is advice.”
Sophia listened with both hands over her mouth.
Emma played on the carpet in the next room under the care of a victim specialist.
Alessandro stopped the recording.
“I should have known.”
Sophia looked at him.
“You should have had a system where people could reach you.”
He accepted the correction.
Guilt did not entitle him to make Sophia comfort him.
Duca Biotech notified regulators and investors of the internal fraud investigation.
Independent counsel preserved the company’s records.
Several senior employees were suspended.
Not everyone who processed an invoice was accused of knowing the scheme.
Investigators distinguished routine work from deliberate concealment.
The company created a protected fund for employees and suppliers affected by the fraudulent contracts.
Alessandro financed part of it personally but placed control with independent administrators.
He refused to use Michael’s death as a public relations campaign.
Sophia and Emma’s privacy remained protected.
Julian’s defense claimed Michael had poisoned Alessandro’s coffee through instructions left before his death.
The theory made little sense but created headlines.
Sophia received anonymous messages calling her husband a thief.
Alessandro offered to move her and Emma into a guarded guest residence.
Sophia declined.
“I do not want another powerful person deciding where we live.”
He nodded.
“What would make you feel safer?”
“A temporary apartment chosen by me. Security I can contact directly. No cameras inside.”
He arranged exactly that through her attorney.
Protection required consent.
Peter Walsh identified the encrypted recruiter after investigators traced payment records.
The recruiter was Julian’s former driver.
The driver admitted delivering packages to the estate but claimed he never knew what they contained.
Messages showed Julian instructing him to obtain medication through falsified prescriptions and place bottles where Peter would unknowingly store them.
One message was sent the night before Alessandro’s breakfast.
JULIAN: TOMORROW MORNING. THE FIRST CUP.
The driver replied:
AND THE CHILD?
Julian wrote:
SHE SHOULD NOT BE IN THE KITCHEN.
The message revealed that Julian knew Emma sometimes visited her mother during early shifts.
He expected Sophia to keep her in the laundry room.
He had calculated the routine.
He had not calculated a sleepy child following the smell of warm bread.
Emma had not merely interrupted breakfast.
