Chapter 2 - THE BOTTLE BEHIND THE COFFEE MACHINE

Detective Rachel Morgan arrived with two uniformed officers and a medical response team.

The coffee cup remained untouched on the napkin.

The bottle stayed behind the machine until crime scene personnel photographed its exact position.

Alessandro gave the officers access to the kitchen recordings and instructed his employees to cooperate.

He did not threaten anyone.

He did not search their belongings himself.

He had survived enough corporate betrayals to understand that rage destroyed evidence faster than guilt did.

Sophia and Emma were moved into the adjoining breakfast room, where they could still see one another through open glass doors.

Emma refused to release the rabbit.

A paramedic examined her only to confirm she had not touched the coffee or any residue. Sophia had prepared Emma’s breakfast separately in the staff apartment.

Detective Morgan sat across from Alessandro.

“Who normally prepares your espresso?”

“My former chef did. He retired last month.”

“And today?”

“The new cook.”

The cook’s name was Peter Walsh.

He had begun working at the estate eleven days earlier after providing references from two wealthy families.

Both references had been verified through telephone calls.

Security was now confirming whether the people who answered those calls were genuine.

Peter sat beneath guard near the pantry entrance.

“I made the espresso,” he said. “I did not put anything in it.”

“Who touched the cup after you?”

“I left it on the silver tray.”

“Where?”

“Beside the breakfast table.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe three minutes.”

“Who was inside the kitchen?”

Peter looked around.

“The maid. Mr. Duca’s assistant. Two servers. Sophia came through once.”

Sophia stood abruptly.

“I never went near the cup.”

Alessandro faced Peter.

“Do not redirect suspicion without evidence.”

“I am only answering.”

Detective Morgan reviewed the first security clip.

At 7:12, Peter ground the coffee and prepared the espresso.

At 7:14, he carried the cup toward the table.

He left the frame to remove bread from the oven.

At 7:15, someone entered through the staff corridor wearing a dark estate jacket and carrying a folded newspaper.

The person kept their face turned away from the camera.

They paused beside the cup for four seconds.

One hand moved above it.

Then the person continued toward the private hallway.

The jacket belonged to senior household staff.

The height and build did not match Peter.

Peter began crying with relief.

“I told you.”

Detective Morgan stopped the recording.

“You are not cleared.”

Another camera showed Peter entering the pantry the previous evening carrying a small package.

He placed it inside a locked cupboard used for imported spices.

When asked to open the cupboard, he hesitated.

Inside was a second medicine bottle.

It was empty.

Peter’s relief disappeared.

He stared at it.

“That is not mine.”

“Who has the cupboard key?” Morgan asked.

“Only me.”

Alessandro’s head of security placed a small ring of spare household keys on the table.

“One master key opens every service cabinet.”

“Who has access?”

“Security command, the estate manager, and members of the Duca family.”

Detective Morgan looked at Alessandro.

“Which family members are currently on the property?”

“My older brother arrived last night.”

Sophia’s grip tightened around Emma.

Alessandro became still.

Julian Duca occupied the east guest wing whenever he visited from Manhattan.

He had attended dinner, complained about the quality of the wine, and left the table after arguing with Alessandro about the future of Duca Biotech.

The company had been founded by their father.

Alessandro controlled the voting shares.

Julian believed birth order should have given him control.

“What was the argument about?” Morgan asked.

“A pending internal audit.”

“Of what?”

“Payments made through a medical supply subsidiary Julian oversees.”

Sophia looked up.

Her late husband had worked for that subsidiary.

Michael Alvarez had been a compliance analyst before his death.

He died three weeks after telling Sophia he had discovered invoices that did not match delivered products.

At the time, Julian called the accusation grief driven speculation.

Alessandro had accepted an internal report stating that Michael acted alone and suffered from anxiety.

Now Alessandro remembered who commissioned that report.

Julian.

The kitchen door opened.

A security officer entered.

“Mr. Duca, your brother is not in the east wing.”

“Where is he?”

“His car remains outside. His phone is on the bedside table.”

Detective Morgan stood.

“Lock down the grounds. Nobody confronts him alone.”

Emma began trembling.

Sophia whispered into her hair.

“You are safe.”

The child looked toward Alessandro.

“Is the bad medicine for you now?”

He crouched at a careful distance.

“I do not know yet.”

“Daddy drank it.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

Alessandro looked toward Detective Morgan.
