Chapter 8 - THE OWNER WHO REFUSED THE THRONE

I selected neither name.
The system rejected the choice.
FOUNDER AUTHORITY REQUIRED.
Fifty seconds remained.
Gideon moved toward the tablet.
Vivian kept the gun raised.
Owen opened the technical panel beneath the screen.
“There are separate storage pathways.”
“Can you divide them?” I asked.
“Not without an authority transfer.”
My mother looked toward the ownership papers.
“Transfer it temporarily.”
“To whom?”
“You.”
“I will become the person controlling every secret.”
“For less than one minute.”
Power described as temporary had created every disaster around us.
Charles became temporary chairman.
Victor? No, not here. Gideon received temporary registry access after my father’s death.
My mother used temporary leverage to help one employee.
Every exception became a structure.
Thirty seconds.
I pressed my thumb to the founder panel.
The Global Registry recognized me.
Absolute access opened.
I saw thousands of lives reduced to categories.
Affairs.
Medical conditions.
Financial crimes.
Abuse reports.
Whistleblower evidence.
Private identities.
No person should possess all of it.
I created three transfers.
Files connected to violent crimes, financial theft, unlawful confinement, and bribery went to an independent federal evidence server.
Records created with guest consent moved to a protected legal archive controlled by courts and victim advocates.
Every hidden recording without consent was encrypted permanently and scheduled for deletion after independent review confirmed it was not evidence of immediate danger.
Gideon stared at the screen.
“You are destroying history.”
“I am removing ownership.”
I transferred control of the remaining system to a seven member independent trust.
No Vale.
No Cross.
No single government agency.
No hotel executive.
The trust required judges, privacy advocates, employee representatives, cybersecurity specialists, and survivor organizations to approve access.
The countdown stopped at four seconds.
Gideon crossed the ballroom toward me.
Owen blocked him.
Police entered through both side doors.
Detective Sloan had used Vivian’s unauthorized entry to trace the hidden ballroom.
Gideon reached for the remote again.
My mother caught his wrist.
For one second, brother and sister stared at each other.
“You built this too,” he said.
“Yes.”
“You do not get to become righteous because Charlotte cleaned it up.”
“No.”
My mother released him.
“I get to become responsible.”
Detective Sloan arrested Gideon.
Vivian lowered the gun and surrendered.
The weapon had contained no ammunition after the warning shot.
She had fired the only round.
Charles was arrested inside the conference room after evidence from the Registry linked him to Northlight House, fraudulent ownership transfers, and the assault plan.
Martin agreed to testify.
Owen provided every security authorization he had altered under threat.
No one received immediate forgiveness for cooperation.
Their evidence could help the truth without erasing their choices.
I went to my mother.
For eight months, I had grieved her.
Now she stood three feet away looking older, thinner, and less certain than the woman I remembered.
“Why did you not contact me after escaping Northlight?”
“I did.”
“I received nothing.”
“Every message route connected to you passed through Gideon.”
“You could have gone to police.”
“I did not know which investigators appeared in the Registry.”
“You could have trusted me.”
Her eyes filled.
“I spent years telling myself I protected you by controlling what you knew.”
“You erased my identity.”
“To stop them using it.”
“You left me alone inside the consequences.”
“Yes.”
The answer was not enough.
It was at least true.
Detective Sloan approached.
“We need statements from both of you.”
My mother looked toward the ballroom doors.
“There is something else.”
The Global Registry had shown twelve Solmere properties.
Eleven regional archives and the flagship.
One location did not appear on any company map.
SOLMERE TWELVE.
My mother had discovered it shortly before the elevator attack.
“Who owns it?” I asked.
“I do not know.”
“What is stored there?”
“The original source files used to build the Registry.”
“Guest recordings?”
“More than that.”
She looked toward my founder’s key.
“The hotel network existed before the Vale family purchased Solmere.”
My grandfather had not created the system.
He had inherited it.
Gideon laughed as officers escorted him away.
“You think you ended anything?”
Detective Sloan stopped him.
He looked toward me.
May you like
“The Registry was never the business. Solmere was only one customer.”
Continue to the next part: Charlotte learns the hotel empire was built above a surveillance network older and more powerful than her own family.
