Chapter 6 - NORTHLIGHT HOUSE

Northlight House stood ninety minutes outside the city behind stone walls and rows of cedar trees.
Official property records described it as a private wellness retreat.
No sign appeared at the road.
Detective Sloan led the search with state investigators while I remained inside the second vehicle with Owen.
Martin had agreed to cooperate.
Charles and Vivian remained under questioning at the hotel.
Gideon’s location was unknown.
The gates opened with my founder’s key.
That meant Northlight remained connected to Solmere systems despite the reported sale.
Inside, the main building looked more like a luxury residence than a clinic.
Soft carpets.
Private dining rooms.
Original paintings.
No visible medical equipment.
Then officers opened the lower floor.
Eight locked bedrooms lined a windowless corridor.
Each door carried an alias.
The people inside were not ordinary patients.
A shipping heiress whose family claimed she left the country after a breakdown.
A retired judge reported missing by his sister.
The former owner of a technology company whose nephew had taken control after doctors declared him incapable.
Every resident possessed wealth someone else managed.
Some had signed property transfers while heavily medicated.
Others never knew their identities had been changed.
My mother’s room was empty.
Her bed remained unmade.
A bandage wrapper inside the bathroom carried the same date as the blood sample.
She had been there thirty six hours earlier.
A hidden camera showed her leaving without assistance.
“She escaped,” Owen said.
The footage showed Evelyn removing a nurse’s access card and entering the service stairwell.
She wore dark clothing and moved slowly, but nobody dragged her.
At the rear exit, she turned toward the camera.
She held up a handwritten message.
CHARLOTTE WILL RETURN TO SOLMERE.
DO NOT TRUST THE FIRST CONFESSION.
I stared at the screen.
“What first confession?”
Detective Sloan’s phone rang.
Charles Cross had requested to speak.
He offered information in exchange for protection.
We returned to the hotel after Northlight residents were transferred to independent medical care.
The Solmere lobby remained closed.
White orchids had been moved away from the blood stain near the entrance.
Charles sat inside a private conference room.
Vivian occupied another room with her attorney.
“My daughter made a terrible mistake,” Charles began.
“She followed your instructions.”
“I intended a controlled confrontation.”
“You intended evidence for a false incapacity claim.”
“I wanted the founder’s key.”
“Where is my mother?”
“She escaped Northlight.”
“Who took her there?”
“Gideon.”
“You approved the facility.”
“Gideon controlled the medical team.”
Every answer moved responsibility toward someone absent.
I placed my mother’s handwritten warning before him.
“What is the first confession?”
Charles looked toward Detective Sloan.
“Gideon will tell you Evelyn created everything.”
“Did she?”
“She created the Registry.”
“Not the hidden cameras.”
“She authorized more than you believe.”
“What?”
Charles leaned closer.
“Your mother recorded guests without consent after your father died. She collected evidence against board members. She used it to keep Solmere under family control.”
The accusation matched part of Gideon’s claim.
My mother may have crossed lines before trying to correct them.
I did not need her to be flawless.
I needed the complete record.
“Why keep her alive?” I asked.
“The founder encryption requires her voice and blood.”
“What were you trying to open?”
“The Global Registry.”
The Solmere flagship held only one section.
Eleven other hotels maintained regional archives.
My mother locked the global system after discovering the blackmail network.
Charles and Gideon needed her biometrics to reopen it.
“Did she give you access?”
“No.”
“That is why you needed me.”
“You carry founder authority through inheritance.”
Charles looked toward the legal envelope.
“The ownership papers contain the second half of the encryption key.”
My mother had sent me more than proof of ownership.
She had sent a weapon capable of opening every Solmere archive.
“Where is Gideon now?”
Charles smiled without warmth.
“Inside this hotel.”
Owen immediately contacted his security team.
No current record showed Gideon entering.
Charles continued.
“He has lived inside the founder’s wing for three weeks.”
“There is no residential space in that wing.”
“There is one room Evelyn never placed on any blueprint.”
Room Zero was not the deepest secret.
Detective Sloan ordered a search.
I stood to leave.
Charles caught my wrist.
Owen removed his hand immediately.
Charles looked at me.
“Do not open the global system.”
“Why?”
“Because Gideon is not waiting for the evidence.”
“What is he waiting for?”
“For Evelyn to return and stop you.”
The conference room lights went dark.
Every hotel screen activated.
My mother appeared.
She sat inside an unfamiliar room with a cut near her temple.
A man stood behind the camera.
Gideon spoke.
“Charlotte, bring the legal envelope to the founder’s ballroom.”
My mother looked directly at me.
Then she said the words from her warning.
May you like
“Do not trust my confession.”
Continue to the next part: Charlotte enters the sealed founder’s ballroom while her mother is forced to admit she created the system used to destroy them both.
