Chapter 4

The officers asked Daniel and Paige to step away from the children.

Neither argued.

Neither could.

A paramedic knelt beside Lily and Mason, checking their temperatures.

"They're going to be okay," she said gently.

"But they were dangerously cold."

Lily looked up at me.

"I thought you might not answer the door."

I brushed a strand of hair from her face.

"I'll always answer the door for you."

She burst into tears.

So did Mason.

For weeks...

They had been carrying fear no child should ever know.

The senior officer returned a few minutes later.

He looked at me.

"Ms. Bennett..."

"Thank you for calling immediately."

"You likely prevented a much worse outcome."

Behind him...

Daniel sat in the back of a patrol car, staring blankly through the window.

Paige stood nearby with her arms wrapped around herself, no longer speaking to anyone.

The confidence they had arrived with was gone.

Completely.

As the ambulance prepared to leave, Lily reached for my hand.

"Can you come with us?"

I smiled.

"Of course."

She leaned against my shoulder.

Safe at last.

I glanced once toward my brother.

Not with anger.

Not even with satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Because the greatest tragedy wasn't that the police believed me.

It was that two small children had walked nearly a mile through freezing darkness...

Past dozens of houses...

To reach the one place where they believed someone would protect them.

And no child makes that journey...

Unless home has already stopped feeling like home.

The End
