Chapter 23 - The Last Payment

Seven years after my surgery, the final restitution payment tied to my trust arrived.
Not Adrian’s full criminal restitution; some obligations continued through federal collection depending assets. But the Vale Trust settlement portion was complete after liquidation of his remaining non-exempt investment interests.
Leah Morgan called.
“Done.”
“What?”
“Vale note enforcement and civil recovery. Final transfer settled.”
“How much?”
Enough to satisfy negotiated amount after credits.
No need celebrate number.
The trust committee allocated part to investments.
I directed permitted charitable distribution from my own separate funds—not trust—to cardiovascular research.
Not as grand gesture.
Because I could.
Westbridge closed its claim.
Northstar closed.
Meridian Development Group completed last legacy hotel project.
Sarah Kemp stepped down.
Employees bought a small equity pool through new plan.
Adrian no longer owned meaningful voting control.
No secret asset.
No future lever.
Financial chapter closed.
Then Leah handed me original forged signature documents.
Evidence retention periods allowed release of certified copies; originals still held where needed? Let's say certified evidentiary copies archived, personal duplicate returned.
“Destroy?”
“Your choice.”
I kept one.
Not framed.
Not displayed.
Locked in archive.
Why?
Because sometimes records matter.
Not obsession.
History.
Then I took the first forged loan summary to lake house.
Sat beside fireplace.
Read my copied signature.
It looked good.
That used to terrify me.
Now it looked like ink.
I tore my personal copy.

The official record existed elsewhere.
I did not need one in my drawer.
