Chapter 3

The operating room doors closed behind Mara.

For a moment, the world disappeared.

No cameras.

No Ryan.

No Brielle.

No betrayal.

Only the cold white lights above her.

The steady rhythm of medical monitors.

And the quiet voices of surgeons preparing to save her life.

"Mrs. Devereaux."

Dr. Ellis looked down at her.

"We're going to take good care of you."

Mara nodded.

"I know."

The anesthesiologist adjusted the mask.

"You'll feel sleepy in a few seconds."

Mara stared upward.

A strange thought crossed her mind.

For years, she had spent so much energy trying to keep everyone else comfortable.

Ryan's career.

Ryan's schedule.

Ryan's image.

Ryan's reputation.

She had defended him when critics attacked.

Supported him when he lost roles.

Moved across the country three times because his career required it.

She had spent years standing behind him.

And somewhere along the way...

She had forgotten she was someone worth standing behind too.

The medication began flowing.

Her eyes grew heavy.

The last thing she heard was Dr. Ellis saying:

"Let's begin."

Upstairs...

Ryan Devereaux stepped back onto the soundstage.

The cameras were ready.

The crew waited.

Director Ethan Ross watched him carefully.

Something was different.

Ryan had always been professional.

Focused.

Charming.

But now...

He looked distracted.

"Ethan."

Ryan adjusted his doctor's costume.

"Can we finish this scene?"

The director stared at him.

"You sure?"

Ryan nodded.

"Yeah."

The cameras rolled again.

But this time...

Ryan couldn't remember his lines.

"Cut."

The word echoed.

Ryan frowned.

"What?"

Ethan removed his headset.

"You're not here."

Ryan forced a smile.

"I'm fine."

"No."

The director shook his head.

"You're performing."

Ryan looked annoyed.

"Isn't that the point?"

Ethan stared at him.

"No."

"Good actors don't pretend to feel."

"They understand."

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan looked toward the hospital windows.

"You know your wife is downstairs, right?"

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Judge me."

Ethan laughed quietly.

"I'm not."

"I just never thought I'd see someone lose the best thing in his life and look relieved."

Ryan looked away.

Meanwhile...

Three hours passed.

The surgery continued.

And downstairs, Vivian and Lenore waited.

Neither woman moved from the hallway.

Vivian's laptop sat open.

Documents filled the screen.

Lenore watched her.

"How bad is it?"

Vivian hesitated.

"Bad."

"Financially?"

"No."

She looked toward the operating room doors.

"Emotionally."

Lenore sighed.

"My daughter loved him."

Vivian nodded.

"I know."

"She built his entire public image."

"She protected his contracts."

"She handled every legal problem he ever had."

Lenore looked down.

"And he replaced her."

Vivian closed the laptop.

"No."

She corrected softly.

"He underestimated her."

When the operating room doors finally opened...

Both women stood immediately.

Dr. Ellis removed her surgical mask.

"Mara is stable."

Lenore released the breath she had been holding for hours.

"The surgery went well?"

"Very well."

"The tumor was removed completely."

Tears filled Lenore's eyes.

"Thank God."

Dr. Ellis smiled.

"But..."

Both women froze.

"There is something you should know."

"What?"

The doctor lowered her voice.

"When Mara woke up briefly during recovery..."

"She asked about one thing."

Lenore frowned.

"What?"

Dr. Ellis looked toward the recovery room.

"She asked if her ring was still gone."

A few minutes later...

Mara slowly opened her eyes.

Everything felt distant.

Heavy.

The room blurred.

But she recognized her mother immediately.

"Mom."

Lenore took her hand.

"I'm here."

Mara looked around.

"Vivian?"

"I'm here."

Vivian stepped closer.

Mara's eyes moved toward her left hand.

The ring was gone.

A tiny breath escaped her.

Relief.

Not sadness.

Relief.

Vivian noticed.

"You don't want it back."

Mara looked at the empty space on her finger.

"No."

"Why?"

Mara was quiet for several seconds.

Then answered:

"Because I don't want something that reminds me of someone who stopped choosing me."

Lenore squeezed her hand.

"Good."

Mara looked surprised.

Her mother smiled.

"For years, I watched you fight for him."

She brushed her daughter's hair back.

"Now I want to watch you fight for yourself."

Later that evening...

Ryan finally came downstairs.

He entered the recovery room carrying flowers.

Expensive ones.

The kind celebrities sent when cameras were watching.

Mara noticed.

Of course.

Even his apology came with a performance.

He stopped when he saw Vivian and Lenore.

"Mara?"

She opened her eyes.

"I'm awake."

Ryan smiled weakly.

"I was so worried."

Nobody reacted.

Not even Mara.

He placed the flowers beside the bed.

"I wanted to explain."

"Okay."

Her calm response surprised him.

He expected anger.

Tears.

Accusations.

Anything.

Not this.

"I made mistakes."

Mara looked at him.

"Plural."

Ryan swallowed.

"Yes."

"Brielle means nothing compared to you."

Mara studied his face.

"Then why did you choose her?"

He had no answer.

"I was scared."

Ryan finally admitted.

"Of what?"

"Everything."

"My career."

"Getting older."

"Not being enough."

Mara nodded slowly.

"So you looked for someone who made you feel powerful."

Ryan lowered his eyes.

She was right.

He reached for her hand.

She moved it away.

Not dramatically.

Not angrily.

Simply away.

That small movement hurt him more than shouting would have.

"Mara..."

"I loved you."

She said quietly.

"More than anyone."

Ryan's eyes filled.

"But love isn't what broke."

She looked directly at him.

"Trust did."

Ryan looked toward Vivian's folder.

"What is that?"

Vivian answered.

"The beginning."

His expression changed.

"The beginning of what?"

Mara looked at her best friend.

Vivian opened the folder.

"Everything Ryan hid."

Contracts.

Messages.

Financial records.

Confidential information.

Ryan stared.

"What are you doing?"

Mara's voice remained calm.

"I'm protecting myself."

"I thought you loved me."

"I did."

A pause.

"That's why I gave you seven years."

She looked away.

"But I only need one day to take my life back."

Ryan stood there silently.

For the first time...

He wasn't looking at his wife like a person he owned.

He was looking at her like someone he had lost.

Outside the recovery room window, Los Angeles lights shimmered across the city.

A city built on stories.

On performances.

May you like

On illusions.

But Mara Whitcomb Devereaux was finished playing a supporting role in someone else's life.
