Chapter 4

The article spread faster than Marissa expected.
By Monday morning...
Richard had already received three phone calls.
Not from family.
From business associates.
One of them laughed.
"I didn't know your daughter was leading the Hayes investigation."
Richard frowned.
"My daughter?"
"Claire."
"She's everywhere."
After hanging up...
He searched her name for the first time in years.
Page after page appeared.
Professional awards.
Conference speeches.
Interviews with financial journals.
Government advisory panels.
Corporate investigations worth billions of dollars.
He stared silently at the screen.
None of it had come from him.
None of it had happened because of his connections.
Claire had built everything alone.
That evening...
The Bennett family gathered for dinner.
The mood was unusually quiet.
Elaine broke the silence.
"I don't understand why she never told us."
Dylan scoffed.
"She probably wanted attention."
Preston looked up from his plate.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
"She never mentioned her career."
"Not once."
Marissa shifted uncomfortably.
Preston continued.
"I only found out because we were assigned to the same investigation."
Elaine forced a smile.
"Well... that's wonderful."
"We're proud of her."
Preston's expression didn't change.
"Were you proud of her when you gave away her room?"
The room fell silent.
No one answered.
Richard cleared his throat.
"That wasn't intentional."
Preston looked directly at him.
"Wasn't it?"
"I saw the guest list."
"Her room assignment had been crossed out days before anyone arrived."
Richard slowly lowered his eyes.
Dylan tried to laugh.
"It wasn't that serious."
Preston turned to him.
"She slept in a six-bed hostel."
"While strangers enjoyed the room meant for your own sister."
Dylan's smile disappeared.
Elaine quietly reached for her wine.
"We've all moved on."
"No."
Preston's voice remained calm.
"You have."
"I don't think Claire ever expected anything from you again."
Marissa whispered,
"She never complained."
"Exactly."
Preston looked around the table.
"That's what should bother all of you."
No one spoke.
He stood.
"I have another meeting."
As he reached the doorway...
He stopped.
Then looked back.
"You owe your sister an apology."
"Every one of you."
He left.
The front door closed behind him.
No one moved for several seconds.
Finally...
Elaine sighed.
"He's overreacting."
Marissa slowly shook her head.
"I don't think he is."
For the first time...
She remembered every small moment.
Claire helping with wedding decorations.
Claire fixing her dress.
Claire smiling in photographs.
Claire thanking the catering staff.
Claire carrying her own suitcase out of the villa.
No anger.
No scene.
No accusations.
Just...
Silence.
That silence suddenly felt unbearable.
Across the country...
Claire sat in her office reviewing another case.
Her assistant entered carrying a small package.
"No return address."
Claire opened it.
Inside was a white gift box.
She lifted the lid.
Folded neatly inside...
Was the pale blue bridesmaid ribbon she had worn at Marissa's wedding.
At the bottom of the box lay a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
"I'm sorry I noticed too late."
No signature.
Claire read it twice.
Then quietly smiled.
She placed the ribbon back inside.
Closed the box.
And returned to work.
She wasn't interested in guessing who had sent it.
An apology...
Even an anonymous one...
Couldn't rewrite the past.
But it did prove something.
Someone had finally seen what everyone else had ignored.
Three days later...
Daniel Mercer stopped by her office.
"I have good news."
Claire looked up.
"The board accepted every recommendation from your report."
"They're restructuring the entire company."
"And?"
"They've asked whether you'd consider serving as an independent advisor."
Claire raised an eyebrow.
"Temporarily."
Daniel smiled.
"They trust you."
Claire leaned back.
"Interesting."
Daniel hesitated.
"There's something else."
He handed her an invitation.
Hayes Capital Annual Leadership Gala.
Claire glanced at the date.
Preston would be giving the keynote address.
Daniel said quietly,
"I think there are people there who owe you more than a handshake."
Claire slipped the invitation into her folder.
"We'll see."
She had no interest in revenge anymore.
May you like
But life...
Had an unusual way of bringing unfinished stories back to the table.
