Chapter 23 - The House I Chose

At forty-six, I sold the Worthington house.
Why?
Too much yard.
I had proven my hatred personally.
Dad was right.
I bought a modern condo downtown again.
Smaller than first.
Higher floor.
No sentimental avoidance.
People asked:
“Another condo after what happened?”
The building type had not hurt me.
People had.
I signed closing documents.
Read every page.
Still used twenty-four-hour rule for large commitments.
My attorney laughed:
“You know half this language better than I do now.”
“Trauma education.”
“Expensive degree.”
True.
Then security.
The new condo came with entry camera.
I added no interior cameras.
That surprised even me.
Why?
I did not need them.
Could I still be harmed?
Yes.
Cameras are evidence, not force fields.
I had savings.
Friends.
Legal documents.
Good building security.
Confidence in calling for help.
Enough.
Then I found a box during move.
Wedding album.
I had kept it twenty-two years.
I sat on floor.
Opened.
Patricia smiling at ceremony.
Gabriel holding my hand.
Dad looking skeptical.
Me happy.
Real.
I removed one photo of Dad dancing with me.
One of Mom’s framed charm attached to bouquet? Mom dead before wedding, maybe there was a locket. Fine but not necessary.
One photo of Gabriel and me laughing during cake.
Why keep?
Because I wanted.
Then I discarded rest.
Not angry.
Space.
Then the old gray fitted T-shirt from assault morning? No way she kept. Maybe not.
I had thrown damaged leggings away as evidence release years earlier.
Good.
No fetishizing artifacts.
Then new neighbor asked if I wanted spare key exchange.
“No, but thank you.”
She said:
“Totally.”
No offense.
A no can remain small.
That still delighted me.
Then I joined condo board for one term.
Irony.
I focused on access controls.
Not authoritarian.
Clear policies.
No resident sharing master codes.
Visitors need individual temporary access.
Everyone complained.
I said:
“Security.”
No personal story.
Policies do not need trauma disclosure to be sensible.
Then Gabriel sent a wedding announcement?
Maybe he later marries. We had learned he was dating. Let's close his future. At forty-nine he married Laura? We don't need name maybe "the woman he mentioned." But user wants complete. We can say through public/mutual acquaintances, he later married "Megan Price", independent teacher, with prenup. But adding name late maybe not necessary. We can say "He later remarried. I knew only because Naomi mentioned a public filing; I wished him well privately and sent nothing." Good.
He and his second wife kept separate premarital homes initially? Not needed.
Then I had relationship? No need.
I remained unmarried by choice.
Not vow.
I dated.
Loved.
No marriage that felt necessary.
At fifty, I stopped answering “why.”
Then I wrote my own estate plan.
My downtown condo to family/charity? We can say named beneficiaries.
No spouse.
Independent executor.
Security credentials instructions.
Destroy old legal files when retention expires.
No dramatic inheritance.
Then I requested copies of criminal case evidence be released/destroyed where law allowed after retention/appeals.
Official court records remained.
My personal copy of assault video?
Still encrypted.
I asked myself why.
Proof.
But nobody disputed.
Patricia admitted.
Gabriel admitted his role.
Cases closed.
I deleted my personal copy after confirming official retention no longer depended on me.
No ceremony.
Clicked delete.
Then empty folder.
I expected emotion.
Nothing.
May you like
Good.
Truth had moved out of my hard drive.
