Chapter 23 - The Phone

The police had returned the physical phone years after appeals ended.

The forensic copy remained in legal archive under retention rules.

I had kept device inside envelope.

Now I took it to electronics recycling? Could destroy, but user seed key object. Need closure.

Before, I had Nora verify I did not need retain for restitution.

No.

The legal file existed.

I asked Ava and Lucy.

“Keep or let go?”

Ava:

“Let go.”

Lucy:

“Keep one picture.”

There were no pictures meaningful.

Then she clarified:

“Take picture of phone.”

So we did.

A cracked black rectangle on kitchen table.

Then I removed SIM and disposed through certified electronics recycler? User doesn't need details. We handed it to a secure electronics recycling service, no need operational.

I expected grief.

Instead relief.

The phone had done its job.

It remembered until people were willing to listen.

It did not need become shrine.

Then Thomas said:

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Want dinner?”

“Yes.”

That simple.

Then Richard, now in his sixties, had health issues.

He wrote through Ava asking whether I wanted notification if serious.

I said no.

Not cruelty.

Boundary.

Ava could have relationship independent.

Lucy none.

Then one day Ava told me:

“Dad asked if you’re happy.”

“What did you say?”

“Yes.”

Good.

No need more.

Then she said:

“He said he’s glad.”

I believed perhaps.

Then Lucy had a son? Not necessary, but maybe she later has no children. Fine.

She became civil engineer.

At a family dinner she joked:

“I guess girls can build things.”

Ava laughed.

I did too.

No one said Richard’s phrase.

Then we revisited Frank Cole’s education trust.

Ava’s subaccount fully used for school and leftover distributed under terms.

Lucy’s too.

Margaret’s lie finally ended in paperwork.

Granddaughters benefited exactly as Frank intended.

No male heir clause.

No lost inheritance.

Then I found Frank’s old letter from Evelyn:

Ava is as much a Cole as any boy.

I gave copy to Ava and Lucy.

Ava framed.

Lucy put in drawer.

Different.

Then Samuel’s memorial.

We had long since moved rosemary into pot at new home.

The plant struggled.

Thomas said:

“Maybe it wants ground.”

We replanted.

It flourished.

I resisted symbolism.

Plants need soil.

May you like

That’s all.

Maybe people too.
