Chapter 6 - THE VOICE THEY TOOK FROM HIM
The device near Daniel’s skull was not designed to control thoughts.
It stimulated a nerve involved in speech, swallowing, and muscle coordination.
When activated at an improper setting, it disrupted his ability to form words and created symptoms resembling severe neurological damage.
Dr. Voss had implanted it during an unauthorized procedure.
The medical records described it as treatment for seizure activity.
Daniel had never experienced seizures before entering Lakehaven.
Miles and Vanessa did not merely sedate him.
They built a medical explanation for his silence.
The university surgical team removed the device.
Daniel remained weak, but his condition improved within hours.
His first clear word was not my name.
It was Owen.
His second was Lily.
The twins entered his room the following afternoon.
Before the visit, the child specialist explained that their father looked different and might not speak normally.
Owen nodded.
Lily asked whether Daniel would know them.
“He never stopped knowing you,” I said.
They walked through the hospital door together.
Daniel lay elevated beneath a white blanket.
He opened his eyes.
Owen froze.
Lily released my hand.
For one terrible second, no one moved.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Bug.”
Lily made a small sound.
It was the nickname only her father used before he disappeared.
She ran toward the bed.
The nurse helped her climb onto the chair beside him.
Owen followed more slowly.
Daniel lifted one shaking hand.
Owen pressed Arthur beneath it.
“You said the bear would find Adrian.”
Daniel looked toward me.
“Late,” he whispered.
The word carried the ghost of our old humor.
I stepped closer.
“I know.”
He moved his fingers around the bear.
“You came.”
“I should have come before.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“So should I.”
The twins remained with him for twenty minutes.
They asked questions children should never need to ask.
Why did you leave?
Why did Vanessa say you died?
Did you hear us when we visited the grave?
Were you asleep for Christmas?
Daniel answered honestly when he could.
“I did not leave.”
“I did not know about the grave.”
“I thought about you every day.”
When the visit ended, Owen refused to release his hand.
Daniel whispered:
“I am not disappearing tonight.”
Owen looked toward the monitor.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
The court permitted Daniel to submit a recorded statement from his hospital bed.
He identified Miles and Vanessa.
He described the remote property, the drugging, the car fire, and the private medical transport.
He identified Dr. Voss as the physician who repeatedly increased sedation whenever Daniel became more responsive.
He also revealed something the bank drive did not contain.
Vanessa had begun manipulating the twins before his disappearance.
She told Lily that Daniel loved Owen more.
She told Owen that protecting Lily meant never questioning adults.
She created fear between them, then positioned herself as the only person capable of keeping the family together.
Daniel planned to seek divorce and full custody.
That was why the attack happened when it did.
Vanessa’s attorney requested a plea agreement.
She offered evidence against Miles and Voss in exchange for reduced charges and continued contact with the twins.
Daniel listened through the hospital screen.
“No.”
His voice remained weak.
The prosecutor clarified that he could not control the criminal agreement.
He could oppose contact.
Vanessa then asked to speak directly with Owen and Lily.
The child specialist recommended against it.
The twins made the final decision.
Owen refused.
Lily asked for one recorded question.
Vanessa appeared on a secure screen wearing county detention clothing.
Her polished confidence had disappeared.
Lily sat beside Daniel’s bed.
“Why did you leave us at the airport?”
Vanessa began crying.
“I was frightened.”
“That is not why.”
“I made a terrible mistake.”
“You took our passports.”
“I thought Miles would send someone back.”
“You said nobody wanted us.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I was angry.”
Lily looked toward her father.
Then back at the screen.
“You wanted us to believe it.”
Vanessa did not answer.
Lily ended the call.
She did not ask for an apology.
She had asked for truth.
Vanessa still could not provide it.
Miles refused to cooperate.
Dr. Voss attempted to describe Daniel’s treatment as experimental medicine authorized by Vanessa.
The original medical directive proved otherwise.
He had ignored a direct prohibition and falsified every review.
The hospital records also revealed payments from Mercer Aeronautics to Lakehaven.
Miles recorded them as executive health services.
The same accounts held another patient under a false name.
Caroline Mercer.
The twins’ biological mother.
According to public records, Caroline died three years earlier.
A Lakehaven patient file showed she had remained alive for six months after the date on her death certificate.
Daniel stared at the screen.
