Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN INSIDE OUR BEDROOM

Adrian moved toward the vault exit.

Rebecca stopped him.

“Building security will reach the penthouse before you.”

“That is my mother inside our home.”

“And she may not be alone.”

On the monitor, Margaret stood beside our bed.

She wore the same cream suit from the board meeting.

Her hair had lost its perfect shape.

She looked frightened.

That expression did not belong to the woman who had calmly admitted framing me.

She lifted both hands toward the camera.

One wrist carried a thin black device.

A voice spoke through the penthouse audio.

“Place the bracelet beside Clara’s pillow.”

Margaret obeyed.

The voice had been electronically altered.

“Open Adrian’s safe.”

“I do not know the code,” she said.

“You gave Victor access.”

“Victor changed it.”

The unknown speaker paused.

“Then ask Clara.”

Margaret looked directly at the hidden camera.

“Clara, do not come home.”

The feed cut to black.

Adrian called penthouse security.

The executive floor had been sealed remotely.

Elevator access failed.

A private response team entered through the service stairwell.

They found Margaret alone in the bedroom.

No one else was visible.

The black device around her wrist contained a small speaker and location tracker.

Someone had instructed her from a distance.

Margaret had entered using a key Victor gave her years earlier.

She claimed Marcus Sterling threatened to release evidence connecting Ethan’s mother’s death to the Vance family unless she recovered the contents of Adrian’s safe.

“What evidence?” Adrian asked over the recorded call.

Margaret remained silent.

Rebecca reminded her that dishonesty now placed everyone at risk.

Margaret finally explained.

Catherine Cole did not die from natural illness as Ethan believed.

She died after a medication error at a private clinic funded by Sterling Capital.

Margaret learned the clinic had falsified records.

Instead of reporting it, she used the information to force the Sterling family to surrender its remaining preferred shares.

Charles later paid Ethan’s education trust as compensation.

Marcus Sterling recovered the hidden clinic documents after his father died.

He used them to control Margaret.

Ethan believed the Vance family deliberately killed his mother.

The truth appeared to be medical negligence followed by concealment.

No evidence showed Charles or Margaret caused the error.

Margaret’s silence allowed Marcus to transform it into murder inside Ethan’s mind.

“What is inside the safe?” I asked.

“Charles’s original settlement with Catherine.”

The document acknowledged Ethan privately, provided compensation, and required no secrecy from the child after age eighteen.

Margaret ignored that requirement.

She destroyed the copy intended for Ethan.

The safe held another.

Marcus wanted it because the document proved Catherine’s death was connected to Sterling’s clinic, not Adrian.

If Ethan saw it, his loyalty to Marcus would collapse.

Adrian gave security the safe code.

The compartment was empty.

Someone had opened it before Margaret arrived.

No damage appeared.

Only Adrian and I knew the current code.

At least that was what we believed.

A small card rested inside.

To consequences.

The same words I spoke after Julianna shoved me.

Someone had heard the boutique conversation before the compact mirror fell from her handbag.

The surveillance network had audio from the beginning.

The second bracelet on our bed was examined.

It was not Helen’s stolen original.

It was another duplicate.

Inside the blue stone was a data drive.

The files contained video of Victor entering the boutique vault.

He argued with Ethan.

Victor wanted to destroy Rachel’s research.

Ethan refused.

He said Marcus Sterling promised to restore it after the merger.

Victor laughed.

“Marcus does not restore anything. He collects leverage.”

Ethan realized too late that the plan would erase every person who could challenge Sterling control.

The final video showed Victor handing the original trust documents to someone outside the camera frame.

A woman’s voice answered.

“You have done enough.”

It was not Margaret.

It was not Julianna.

It was not Helen.

I recognized it.

Naomi Reed.

The boutique manager stood three feet away from me inside the vault.

Her face lost color.

“I can explain.”

Security turned toward her.

She raised both hands.

“Victor gave me the documents, but I did not give them to Marcus.”

“Where are they?” Rebecca asked.

Naomi looked toward the gold framed mirror.

“Behind the glass.”

Security removed the mirror backing.

A sealed envelope rested inside.

The original Sterling redemption agreement was there.

So was Rachel Bennett’s share certificate.

Naomi had hidden them instead of destroying them.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because Victor said Marcus would close the Chicago workrooms after the merger.”

She had participated in the humiliation setup.

She had protected documents that could save hundreds of jobs.

One action did not erase the other.

Before Rebecca could question her further, every light in the boutique went dark.

The entrance locks released.

The emergency system announced no fire.

The power had been cut remotely.

When the lights returned thirty seconds later, Naomi was gone.

So was the envelope.

May you like

On the marble floor beside the gold mirror lay Ethan’s black stone ring.

Continue to the next part: Naomi disappears with the documents, leaving Clara and Adrian uncertain whether she is protecting the company, serving Marcus Sterling, or attempting to expose a third conspirator.
