Chapter 3 - THE WITNESS BEHIND THE COUNTER

We reached the Rusty Spoon twelve minutes later.

Nora was gone.

The coffee pot remained on the warmer.

Her beige apron lay beneath the register.

The back door stood open.

No signs of a struggle appeared in the dining room.

The security camera had been removed from the wall.

Its wires hung above the register.

Dominic had been placed inside a federal transport vehicle after the garage search.

He could not have returned.

Someone else had taken Nora.

The diner owner, Clyde Bennett, emerged from the kitchen.

He was sixty seven, a Vietnam veteran with a damaged left hand and a habit of sitting near the window whenever Nora worked.

“She told me this would happen,” he said.

“What did she know?” Sarah asked.

Clyde looked toward Amelia.

“More than Mrs. Hale wanted recorded.”

Amelia lowered her eyes.

Nora had worked at the Rusty Spoon for eleven years.

Dominic used the back booth for private meetings because he believed an old diner camera recorded only the register.

Nora discovered that the lens also reflected the mirrored pie display.

The reflection captured most of the booth.

She had seen Dominic meet county judges, property developers, Blackpine representatives, and frightened veterans.

She had also seen Amelia.

Their first meeting lasted twenty minutes.

Their final one occurred that morning.

Clyde opened the jukebox near the kitchen.

Behind the song selection panel, he removed a small storage drive.

“Nora kept the copy here.”

Sarah inserted it into a secured reader.

The first recording showed Dominic sitting across from Amelia.

He placed the detention order on the table.

Amelia read every page.

The video had no sound.

Her finger stopped beside the section authorizing seizure of the blue case.

Dominic pointed toward the signature line.

Amelia hesitated.

Then she signed.

She could no longer claim she had seen only a medical form.

The next clip contained audio.

The diner had been empty except for Nora cleaning behind the counter.

Dominic leaned toward Amelia.

“At noon, you do nothing.”

“What does that mean?” she asked.

“When I approach Logan, you stay seated.”

“You said no one would hurt him.”

“No one will if he cooperates.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Show the town what he is.”

Amelia looked toward the window.

“I do not want him killed.”

Dominic smiled.

“Then hope your husband has better control than his file suggests.”

She did not leave.

She did not warn me.

That choice ended any remaining doubt.

The final recording began three hours before the milkshake incident.

A third man entered the booth.

He was older, broad shouldered, with white hair and a dark civilian coat.

My body recognized him before my mind accepted the face.

Captain Warren Shaw.

My commanding officer during Operation White Ridge.

The man who ordered our evidence sealed.

The man who told the Navy that Eli Ward died during unauthorized travel.

Shaw had retired four years earlier and accepted an executive position at Blackpine Defense Systems.

Dominic slid the detention order across the table.

Shaw inspected Amelia’s signature.

“She believes the case contains money?” he asked.

Dominic nodded.

“She believes whatever explains why her husband never trusted her.”

Amelia’s face tightened.

“I am sitting here.”

Shaw looked at her.

“That is why I said it.”

He did not respect her.

He understood her resentment and treated it as equipment.

Amelia stood.

“I signed the order. I gave you the code. I am done.”

Shaw answered calmly.

“You are done when the case is recovered.”

“What happens to Logan?”

“He receives treatment.”

“What kind?”

“The kind that makes public testimony unreliable.”

Amelia stared at him.

She finally understood that they intended to drug me.

She still did not warn me.

Instead, she asked:

“And the money?”

Shaw smiled.

“Your concern for your husband is touching.”

The recording ended when Nora approached the booth.

Another file showed what happened six months earlier.

Eli Ward entered the diner.

Older.

Thinner.

Alive.

He sat across from Nora and handed her an envelope.

Dominic arrived moments later.

Eli tried to leave.

Two deputies entered through the back door.

They escorted him outside.

No arrest appeared in the county record.

No booking entry existed.

Nora had witnessed the abduction of a man officially declared dead.

Her fear now made sense.

The envelope Eli gave her was not inside the jukebox.

Clyde looked toward the floor.

“She kept it somewhere Dominic could not search without destroying his own diner.”

“His diner?” I asked.

Clyde nodded.

“Dominic owns the building through a private company.”

The sheriff controlled the place where he performed his humiliation.

He controlled the employees.

He controlled the cameras.

He believed he controlled every witness.

Sarah’s phone received an emergency alert.

A county patrol car had been found abandoned near the old quarry road.

Nora’s shoe lay beside it.

Dominic requested to speak with me.

Sarah initially refused.

I told her to open the recorded line.

Dominic appeared behind the transport window.

“Where is Nora?”

He smiled.

“You finally sound angry.”

“Where is she?”

“Ask your wife.”

Amelia stared at him.

“I do not know.”

Dominic laughed.

“You gave us the tracker in Logan’s truck. You gave us the code. You gave us his schedule.”

“I did not give you Nora.”

“No. You gave us the habit of trusting you.”

He looked toward me.

“Bring the blue case to the quarry.”

“You know federal agents have it.”

“Then persuade them.”

“What happens if I do not?”

“Nora joins Eli Ward.”

Sarah leaned toward the microphone.

“You are already in custody.”

Dominic’s smile widened.

“You think I am the only sheriff in this county?”

The transport vehicle alarm sounded.

Its rear camera failed.

A county ambulance turned into the parking area with emergency lights active.

The driver wore a medical uniform.

The ambulance authorization carried a valid federal transfer code.

Sarah stared at her phone.

“I did not approve that.”

The code belonged to her office.

Someone inside the military legal system was still helping Shaw.

Continue to the next part: Dominic escapes during a transfer authorized by the same JAG office protecting Logan.
