Chapter 9 - The Stage Prepared for Two Girls

The Blackthorne auditorium lights came on as we entered.
Julian sat at center stage with his hands tied behind the chair. His face was bruised, but he was conscious.
Richard stood beside the founder’s podium.
He looked older than the photographs, yet his posture remained straight. Wealth had preserved him inside controlled rooms while everyone else carried the consequences of his absence.
Alexander stepped in front of Victoria and me.
“You wanted me. Let the girls leave.”
Richard smiled.
“I wanted heirs. You were merely the transport.”
He had staged his death ten years earlier after federal investigators approached Vale Meridian. Sebastian Langford moved him through Blackthorne’s private tunnels and gave him access to school funds.
The scholarship theft financed his hidden network.
Every student accused of stealing had discovered part of the operation.
Elena came closest to exposing him.
Richard had not killed her because she carried Alexander’s child.
He needed a future bloodline.
Nicholas’s relationship with Celeste created a second heir.
Two girls.
Two branches.
One controlled through poverty.
One controlled through privilege.
Richard believed opposing lives would keep us from trusting each other.
He was almost right.
Victoria had spent years hurting me.
I had spent years believing girls like her were born cruel.
Neither of us looked closely enough at the adults teaching us our roles.
Richard placed two silver scanners on the podium.
“One drop from each girl.”
Alexander refused.
Richard pointed toward Julian.
A tube connected the chair to the auditorium ventilation controls.
“Mr. Cross has three minutes.”
Julian looked at Alexander.
“Do not do it.”
Richard pressed a button.
Julian began choking.
Victoria moved toward the stage.
I caught her arm.
“He may kill us after.”
“He may kill Julian now.”
We climbed together.
The scanners accepted our blood.
The auditorium screen displayed two identity confirmations.
Ava Rose Vale.
Victoria Claire Vale.
Then the Vale Foundation archive opened.
Financial accounts appeared.
Properties.
Private corporations.
Political donations.
Blackthorne was only the smallest piece.
Richard began the transfer.
Alexander seized his father’s wrist.
Security panels opened around the stage.
Armed men emerged from behind the curtains.
Richard had prepared for resistance.
Julian used the distraction to break one hand free. He pulled the ventilation tube from the chair and struck the nearest guard.
Victoria grabbed the diamond bracelet from the podium.
The clasp contained more than a memory card.
It contained the override key Elena had discovered years earlier.
She shouted from the auditorium entrance.
“Press the crescent twice.”
Victoria obeyed.
Every screen froze.
The transfer stopped at ninety eight percent.
Richard turned toward Elena.
“You should have died in the first fire.”
“You should have checked whether women stayed obedient after you buried them.”
Police entered from the side corridors.
Sebastian had given investigators the tunnel codes in exchange for protection.
Richard’s guards surrendered one by one.
He did not.
He drew a small pistol and aimed at me.
Alexander stepped between us.
Richard laughed.
“You finally choose the girl you never raised over the father who built you.”
Alexander did not move.
“You did not build me. You trained me to mistake fear for loyalty.”
A shot sounded.
Richard fell.
Julian held the smoking weapon he had taken from a guard.
The bullet struck Richard’s shoulder, not his heart.
Police restrained him.
He watched them close the handcuffs and smiled.
“You stopped the transfer too late.”
Julia checked the archive.
Ninety eight percent of the foundation assets remained frozen.
Two percent had moved.
Two percent equaled more than one hundred million dollars.
The recipient account carried a student name.
Ava Mercer.
I stared at the screen.
Richard had transferred the money to me.
Alexander looked at his father.
“Why?”
“Because the person who holds the money becomes the criminal.”
Every federal record now identified me as the beneficiary of stolen foundation assets.
The same method used against my mother.
A false transfer.
A public accusation.
A poor girl made to look greedy.
Richard had repeated the first crime on a larger scale.
Police received an automatic financial alert.
Two federal agents entered the auditorium.
They looked at the account, then at me.

One removed handcuffs.
Continue to the next part: Richard transfers stolen millions into Ava’s name, recreating the accusation that destroyed her mother.
