Chapter 8 - The Floor Beneath the Floor

Forensic teams returned to the Bennett house with ground penetrating radar.

The first basement had concealed Sarah, Noah, and Julia.

The second medical chamber held evidence of illegal surgeries.

Scans now revealed another structure beneath both.

A deeper level.

It extended beyond the house and under part of the backyard.

No visible staircase reached it.

Architectural records showed the foundation had been expanded twelve years earlier by Richard’s company.

The permit described stormwater storage.

The actual space contained rooms.

At least twelve.

Daniel ordered an immediate breach.

Before teams entered, a temperature alarm sounded.

Heat rose rapidly beneath the floor.

Someone had activated an incineration system.

Fuel lines ran through the lower structure.

The network had built a method to destroy evidence and anyone trapped inside.

Firefighters cut through the concrete.

Smoke entered the basement.

A tactical officer heard banging below.

Sarah stood outside the perimeter with Rebecca, Emily, and Noah.

She could hear sirens, engines, and shouted commands.

The house had once seemed silent from beneath the floor.

Now every sound meant someone was finally trying to reach the hidden rooms.

A section of concrete collapsed.

Fire crews descended.

The lower level contained metal cages, medical storage, and records waiting to burn.

Three children were found alive.

A fourth room was empty but recently occupied.

On one wall, names had been written repeatedly.

Some matched missing children from Dr. Shaw’s ledger.

Others were unknown.

Firefighters recovered a steel evidence box before the flames reached it.

Inside were video recordings made by Richard.

He documented transfers, punishments, surgeries, and negotiations with families.

He filmed everything for leverage.

One video showed Margaret and Evelyn arguing after Sarah’s first transplant.

Margaret wanted Sarah killed.

Dr. Shaw refused.

“She remains compatible with Emily.”

Margaret said, “She remembers the nurse.”

“Then alter her memory.”

“She looks at me like she knows.”

“She is four.”

“She is wrong.”

Evelyn responded coldly.

“She is valuable.”

Sarah watched only part of the recording before turning away.

Her captivity had not resulted from one belief or one moment of madness.

It continued because multiple adults found uses for her.

Margaret used her to save Emily.

Richard used her to earn money and control Margaret.

Dr. Shaw used her as proof that long term donor preservation worked.

Helen used the lie of Sarah’s happiness to protect herself.

Grant used the house to hide his own son.

Every adult had a reason.

None of those reasons belonged to Sarah.

Among the rescued children was a nine year old girl named Lila.

She recognized Sarah immediately.

“You’re Upstairs Sarah.”

“What does that mean?”

“The lady showed us videos.”

“What lady?”

“Dr. Shaw.”

Lila said Evelyn used recordings of Sarah’s leap day visits to teach other imprisoned children that obedience could earn freedom.

Sarah’s rare hours upstairs became propaganda.

Children in other sites believed she lived with the family because she followed rules.

They did not know she returned to the basement at midnight.

“They said you were chosen,” Lila whispered.

Sarah knelt several feet away.

“I wasn’t chosen. I was trapped too.”

“Did you ever get outside?”

“Not until the police came.”

Lila began crying.

“They told us outside wasn’t real.”

The statement silenced everyone nearby.

Police extracted server drives from the steel box.

The files showed Site 29 had sister locations across the United States.

Some operated beneath private rehabilitation centers.

Others were hidden inside luxury estates.

Dr. Shaw’s network served families seeking organs, replacement identities, concealed heirs, or the removal of children who witnessed crimes.

Hundreds of files had been recently transferred to an offshore server.

The access occurred after Sarah’s rescue.

Someone was coordinating the network’s response.

Evelyn did not appear to control it alone.

One administrative account repeatedly overruled her.

The username was FEBRUARY.

Sarah remembered the calendar in her basement.

She remembered Richard changing the pages.

On leap day, he always received a phone call before releasing her upstairs.

He addressed the caller as Sir.

The network’s leader was likely a man.

Richard agreed to speak after prosecutors presented the murder evidence.

He demanded protection.

Daniel entered the interview room.

“Who is February?”

Richard smiled weakly.

“You think Margaret and I invented this?”

“Who?”

“The first families built it after the war.”

“What war?”

“Vietnam.”

A group of military doctors and wealthy donors began an illegal program matching abandoned children with injured veterans’ families.

Over time, the program shifted from adoption to biological exploitation.

Dr. Shaw inherited the medical side.

Richard managed construction.

Grant protected locations.

But February controlled records and client selection.

“Name him.”

Richard leaned back.

“I never saw his face.”

“How did he contact you?”

“Through Margaret.”

Daniel looked toward the observation glass.

“Margaret knows who he is?”

Richard laughed.

“Margaret knows because she is his daughter.”

Margaret Bennett’s official father died before she was born.

Her birth certificate left the paternal line blank.

Richard said her real father financed Sarah’s purchase and Emily’s surgeries.

He visited the Bennett house every leap year.

Sarah remembered a man upstairs during her freedom days.

Gray suit.

Silver cane.

He never spoke directly to her.

He watched from the hallway while Margaret asked questions.

She had always called him Uncle Henry.

Investigators identified Henry Wallace, a retired United States senator known for child welfare legislation and medical philanthropy.

He was eighty three.

He chaired the foundation that funded Mercy Ridge Hospital, Dr. Shaw’s research, and Julia’s tutoring program.

He had publicly supported Rebecca’s missing child campaign.

Henry Wallace had spent decades building the appearance of protecting children.

Privately, he may have controlled the system that stole them.

Federal agents reached his estate.

The staff found his office empty.

A wheelchair sat beside an open window.

On the desk was a photograph of Sarah taken during her most recent leap day.

A handwritten message rested beneath it.

Bring Sarah to the place where she was born, and I will return the remaining children.

Continue to the next part: Sarah returns to the abandoned maternity hospital where she was stolen and finds Margaret waiting beside a nursery filled with empty cribs.
