Chapter 9 - Claire’s Phone

Police found Claire’s phone in Wade’s truck.

Powered off.

Wrapped inside a work glove under the passenger seat.

Wade claimed Claire threw it during the argument and he picked it up.

Then forgot.

Digital history said:

11:44 p.m. Claire calls me.

11:48 another attempt.

11:49 phone powered off.

Wade’s truck left the property at 6:35 a.m.

Stops:

Lena’s school.

Bus station.

Convenience store.

Copper Hearth.

Before he found Lena, he called Claire’s sister.

“Claire disappeared and Lena ran.”

Again.

There had been no earlier disappearance.

Then he emailed Tara Boone:

Claire has had some kind of breakdown. Do not release company records to her.

Timestamp:

6:52 a.m.

Claire was locked downstairs.

Then Lena’s school principal received:

If Lena arrives, call me first. Her mother is missing and may be unsafe.

Not police.

Not Claire’s sister.

Wade.

Then guardianship petition metadata.

Final edit:

6:58 a.m.

Draft affidavit:

Claire Mercer left the residence during an emotional episode and abandoned Lena.

False.

She was locked in his basement.

Then Claire’s laptop.

Recovered from Wade’s home office.

Recently opened:

Mercer trust audit.

2016 amendment.

Guardianship research.

Claire’s draft email to attorney:

I believe Wade has been diverting distributions from Lena’s trust and using her medical expenses as justification. If something happens to me, contact Mark Dalton because he witnessed Owen’s amendment.

Wade had seen it.

That likely explained why my name terrified him at the café.

Then his defense changed.

He no longer denied locking Claire downstairs.

He said he did it “for safety” because she became hysterical.

A locked exterior door.

No phone.

Broken wrist.

Seven hours.

Then he left property.

Hard to call temporary safety.

Then Lena asked me:

“Was he going to shoot you?”

“I don’t know.”

“He had a gun.”

“Yes.”

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

That surprised her.

“You didn’t look scared.”

“Looking calm and feeling calm are different.”

Then:

“Why didn’t you fight him?”

“Police were coming.”

“You could’ve.”

“Maybe.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Safe is better than impressive.”

She thought.

Then Rex put his head against her knee.

“Is that why Dad trusted you?”

I laughed.

“Owen thought I was an idiot half the time.”

Claire smiled.

“Accurate.”

Good.

Then school.

Lena returned after two weeks.

At the entrance, she froze.

Wade had searched there.

Claire asked:

“Want to go home?”

Lena shook her head.

“No.”

Then entered.

Choice.

Not forced bravery.

A classmate asked:

“Where were you?”

“Family problem.”

Enough.

Another stared at her prosthetic.

Lena said:

“It’s a leg.”
