Chap 2

Ethan shoved a nurse aside and sprinted toward the emergency exit.

"Stop him!" someone shouted.

The hallway instantly erupted into chaos.

Doctors stepped out of treatment rooms.

Patients looked up in confusion.

Security alarms echoed through every floor of the hospital.

The automatic doors at the end of the corridor slid shut with a loud metallic thud.

Locked.

Every exit had been sealed.

Ethan slammed both hands against the glass.

"No... no... open!"

He frantically searched for another way out, but before he could turn around, four hospital security officers surrounded him.

"Sir, don't move."

One officer grabbed his wrist.

Another reached for the handcuffs hanging from his belt.

Ethan struggled violently.

"You can't do this!"

"My wife is dying!"

"I need to be with her!"

The officers didn't respond.

One of them had already heard Dr. Liam's order.

This man wasn't a worried husband anymore.

He was the prime suspect.

Within moments, Ethan was forced to his knees in the middle of the hallway.

His expensive gray suit was wrinkled.

His perfectly polished shoes scraped helplessly across the floor.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't the one in control.

Back inside Trauma Room Three...

Liam stood beside Emily's bed while nurses continued stabilizing her condition.

Her heartbeat echoed softly through the cardiac monitor.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

Every sound reminded him she was still alive.

But barely.

He carefully examined the bruises covering her body.

The CT scan appeared on the large monitor.

A young resident frowned.

"Doctor..."

"There are multiple rib fractures."

Liam nodded silently.

"They're healing."

The resident looked confused.

"These injuries didn't happen tonight."

Another scan appeared.

Hairline fractures near her left wrist.

An old fracture around her collarbone.

Scarring along her upper back.

The room became painfully quiet.

One experienced trauma nurse slowly removed Emily's wedding ring before inserting an IV.

She stared at the bruises for several seconds.

Then whispered,

"This isn't the first time."

Liam closed his eyes.

"No."

"It isn't."

A flood of memories crashed into him.

Emily laughing at family dinners.

Emily insisting she was just clumsy whenever someone noticed another bruise.

Emily canceling birthdays.

Missing holidays.

Answering fewer phone calls every month.

Every excuse suddenly made sense.

She hadn't been busy.

She'd been hiding.

And he...

He never saw it.

His hands trembled for the first time in his medical career.

"I should've known."

The head nurse gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You couldn't have."

Liam shook his head.

"I'm her brother."

"I promised I'd always protect her."

His voice broke.

"And I failed."

Meanwhile...

Hospital security searched Ethan.

One officer emptied his pockets.

Wallet.

Car keys.

Phone.

As protocol required, the phone was placed into an evidence bag.

An officer glanced at the screen.

"It's still unlocked."

He handed it to Liam.

"Doctor..."

"I think you should see this."

Liam hesitated.

Then unlocked the recent messages.

His stomach turned.

Message after message filled the screen.

Emily's texts.

Never answered.

Emily:
"I'm sorry if I made you angry."

Emily:
"I promise it won't happen again."

Emily:
"Please don't hit me anymore."

Liam felt his heartbeat stop.

There were hundreds of messages.

Nearly all from Emily.

Almost none received a reply.

Instead...

There were videos.

Photos.

One video automatically began playing.

Emily sat on the bedroom floor, crying.

Ethan's voice could be heard off camera.

"If you tell your brother..."

"I'll make sure he finds your body instead."

The video ended.

Silence swallowed the room.

One security officer quietly muttered,

"My God..."

Another looked away in disgust.

Liam's grip tightened around the phone.

His knuckles turned white.

Then another discovery.

A hidden photo album.

Locked.

The officer managed to access it using facial recognition while Ethan was being restrained.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Emily asleep with fresh bruises.

Emily kneeling while scrubbing floors.

Emily covering one eye with makeup.

Each picture had a date.

The abuse stretched back almost two years.

Liam couldn't breathe.

Every injury...

Every smile she'd forced during family gatherings...

Every lie she'd told to protect her husband...

Now stared back at him from the screen.

He slowly looked through the hospital window.

Ethan sat handcuffed in the hallway.

Still pretending to cry.

Still pretending to be the victim.

Liam walked out of the trauma room.

Every step was deliberate.

Every person in the hallway moved aside.

Nobody dared stop him.

Ethan looked up hopefully.

"Liam..."

"Please."

"You know I love her."

"It was just—"

Before he could finish...

CRACK!

Liam's fist slammed into Ethan's face.

The force knocked him backward out of the chair.

Blood streamed from Ethan's nose as security officers immediately stepped between them.

"Doctor!"

"Stop!"

Liam didn't struggle.

He simply stared down at the man who had nearly killed his sister.

His voice was colder than anyone had ever heard.

"You didn't just attack my sister."

"You spent two years trying to destroy the strongest person I've ever known."

Blue and red police lights suddenly flashed through the hospital entrance.

The elevator doors opened.

Three detectives stepped into the emergency department.

The lead detective walked directly toward Liam.

"Dr. Brooks?"

Liam silently handed him Ethan's phone.

"I believe you'll find everything you need."

The detective spent less than thirty seconds scrolling through the evidence.

His expression darkened immediately.

He looked at Ethan.

May you like

Then spoke four words that made the entire hallway fall silent.

"Place him under arrest."
