Chapter 1

The first person Sable Callaway wanted her newborn daughter to see was her father.

Not because Marlo would remember the moment.

But because Sable believed some moments shaped a family forever.

She had imagined Weston smiling through tears.

She had imagined him lifting their daughter into his arms.

She had imagined the first photograph of the three of them together.

Instead...

She watched her husband remain near the window as though the tiny baby sleeping against her chest belonged to someone else.

Morning sunlight spilled through the tall windows of the private maternity suite at St. Augustine Women's Medical Center in Charleston.

Everything felt peaceful.

The rhythmic beeping of the monitors.

The soft footsteps of nurses outside.

The quiet breaths of the newborn wrapped in a white hospital blanket with pink and blue stripes.

Marlo's tiny fingers curled around one of Sable's.

The little girl yawned in her sleep.

Sable smiled despite the exhaustion that still weighed on every muscle after nearly nineteen hours of labor.

"She's beautiful."

Nurse Emily Brooks adjusted the baby's blanket.

"She looks just like you."

Sable looked toward Weston.

"Do you want to hold her?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stared through the window toward the hospital parking lot.

Hands buried inside the pockets of his expensive gray cashmere overcoat.

His expression unreadable.

Sable tried again.

"West?"

He slowly turned.

His face carried none of the joy she'd expected.

No pride.

No relief.

Only... distance.

He walked halfway across the room before stopping.

Not beside the bed.

Not close enough to touch their daughter.

Just close enough to make sure she could hear every word.

"I need to tell you something."

Sable felt a strange knot tighten in her stomach.

"What is it?"

Weston inhaled slowly.

His voice remained calm.

Too calm.

"I already have a son.

The room became impossibly still.

Sable blinked.

"What?"

"He's four years old."

She laughed once.

A small, confused sound.

"I don't understand."

"His mother contacted me last year."

Every heartbeat inside Sable's chest seemed to slow.

"You..."

Her voice barely existed.

"...have another child?"

Weston nodded.

"I took a DNA test."

"It was positive."

The world seemed to tilt.

For six years they had been married.

For six years they had dreamed about becoming parents.

And all along...

He had been hiding an entire child.

Nurse Emily quietly looked toward the door.

Professional instinct told her this conversation didn't belong in front of medical staff.

"I'll give you both some privacy."

She slipped out without another word.

The door clicked shut.

Silence remained.

Sable looked down at Marlo sleeping peacefully against her chest.

The baby stretched slightly, completely unaware that her entire future had just changed.

"When?"

Sable whispered.

"When did you find out?"

"Twelve months ago."

Her breath caught.

"Twelve..."

She stared at him.

"I was pregnant."

"I know."

"You let me decorate a nursery."

"I know."

"You stood beside me at every ultrasound."

"I know."

Each answer sounded colder than the last.

Finally, Weston looked directly at his daughter.

For the first time.

Sable hoped...

Just for a second...

That she saw regret.

Instead, he quietly said,

"I'm not signing the birth certificate."

The words landed harder than anything else.

Sable instinctively pulled Marlo closer against her chest.

"What did you say?"

"I've already decided."

"Weston..."

"If I legally acknowledge another child right now..."

He paused.

"...it complicates things."

"Complicates what?"

"My estate."

"My son."

"My family's trust."

Sable stared at him in disbelief.

"Our daughter was born less than an hour ago."

"I know."

"And you're talking about paperwork?"

"I'm talking about protecting what's already mine."

For a long time...

Neither of them spoke.

Marlo made a tiny sleepy noise.

Sable gently kissed the baby's forehead.

Then she noticed the tiny identification bracelet around Marlo's ankle.

A simple plastic band.

Name.

Birth date.

Hospital number.

Proof that this little girl existed.

Whether anyone claimed her or not.

Tears filled Sable's eyes.

But they never fell.

She looked back at Weston.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Then remember this moment."

He frowned.

"What?"

"The first time your daughter ever looked at you..."

She paused.

"...and you chose money instead."

Without another word, Weston picked up his overcoat and walked toward the door.

He hesitated for only a fraction of a second.

Never looked back.

The door closed softly behind him.

Sable remained completely still.

Only after several minutes did Nurse Emily quietly return.

She immediately understood.

She had worked in maternity care for nearly twenty years.

She had seen fathers faint.

Cry.

Celebrate.

Even panic.

She had never seen one refuse to acknowledge his newborn child.

Emily gently adjusted Marlo's blanket.

"Would you like me to call someone?"

Sable thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

"My sister."

She managed a tired smile.

"Odette."

As the nurse left to make the call, Sable looked once more at the tiny bracelet around Marlo's ankle.

She whispered softly enough that only her daughter could hear.

"You'll never have to wonder if you're enough."

May you like

Outside the room, footsteps hurried down the hallway.

Inside, Sable didn't yet know that before the next sunrise, everything Weston believed he controlled—including his family's fortune—would begin to unravel.
