Chapter 1 - THE CHANDELIER FELL WHERE EMILY HAD BEEN STANDING

The chandelier struck the marble with enough force to shake the ballroom.

Crystal exploded beneath the golden lights.

Guests screamed and stumbled backward as hundreds of glass pieces scattered across the polished floor.

Emily Carter lay several feet from the wreckage with one hand pressed over her pregnant belly.

Sophie Lane was on the floor beside her.

The young maid had both arms wrapped around Emily’s shoulders, using her own body to shield the pregnant woman from the final fragments raining down around them.

For one second, nobody understood what had happened.

A moment earlier, Emily had been standing beneath the center chandelier speaking to a group of donors.

Then Sophie had crossed the ballroom at a run.

She had seized Emily around the waist and driven both of them toward the grand staircase.

Several guests had seen only the shove.

They had not seen Sophie glance toward the ceiling first.

Now the chandelier lay twisted across the exact place where Emily had been standing.

A woman in a silver evening gown covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Emily could not breathe properly.

Her auburn hair had fallen across her face. Her cream silk blouse was torn near one sleeve, and the fitted black skirt had twisted around her knees.

She felt no immediate pain in her abdomen.

That did not quiet the terror.

Her baby had moved less than a minute earlier.

Now she felt nothing.

“Sophie,” she whispered.

The maid lifted her head.

A thin cut marked Sophie’s temple where a small fragment had struck her, but there was no serious bleeding. Her burgundy uniform was covered with crystal dust.

“Do not move yet.”

Emily stared toward the shattered chandelier.

“You pushed me.”

“I had to.”

“Why?”

Sophie looked toward the ceiling.

“The cable.”

A severed metal line hung above the wreckage.

It had not snapped cleanly under weight.

Several strands were bent and crushed.

Others looked sharply divided.

Before Emily could understand what she was seeing, Daniel Carter rushed through the crowd.

He wore a black tuxedo and bow tie. His dark hair remained neatly styled despite the panic around him.

He dropped to one knee beside Emily.

For half a heartbeat, relief moved across her face.

Then Daniel looked past her toward Sophie.

His expression filled with rage.

“You pushed my wife.”

Sophie remained on the floor.

“The chandelier was falling.”

“You attacked her.”

“I saved her.”

Daniel rose too quickly.

He pointed toward the maid while several guests stared.

“Security, do not let her leave.”

Emily reached for his sleeve.

“Daniel, look at the chandelier.”

He ignored her.

“She has been acting strangely for weeks. She has been following Emily through the house and asking questions about the family.”

Sophie pushed herself upright.

“I was watching the ceiling because I heard metal moving.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I do not care what you believe.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

The response was not frightened enough for him.

He turned toward the head of security.

“Remove her.”

Emily stared at her husband.

“Stop.”

Daniel looked down.

“What?”

“She saved me.”

“You do not know what happened.”

“I know where I was standing.”

Emily pointed toward the wreckage.

“If she wanted to hurt me, why would she push me away from that?”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Something fell from his tuxedo pocket before he could answer.

The object struck the marble with a metallic clatter.

A pair of wire cutters slid through the crystal fragments.

Silence spread through the ballroom.

The cutters stopped beside Emily’s shoe.

Tiny strands of silver cable remained trapped between the blades.

Daniel stared down.

The color disappeared from his face for less than a second.

Then his expression hardened again.

“They are not mine.”

Nobody had accused him yet.

Emily looked from the cutters to the severed chandelier cable.

“Daniel, what is that?”

He stepped toward them.

The head of security moved first and placed one shoe over the tool.

“Please do not touch it, Mr. Carter.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You work for me.”

“I work for the estate, and this room may now be a crime scene.”

A low murmur moved through the guests.

Daniel glanced toward the exits.

Two members of the security team had already closed the ballroom doors.

They were not trapping guests.

They were preventing anyone from removing objects before authorities arrived.

Emily tried to stand.

Pain moved through her hip.

Sophie immediately placed one arm around her.

Daniel saw the maid touching his wife.

Something inside him broke.

He reached beneath his tuxedo jacket.

For one terrible moment, Emily thought he was reaching for his phone.

A narrow knife appeared in his hand.

The closest guests recoiled.

Someone screamed.

Daniel stepped toward Emily.

Sophie moved between them.

She did not hesitate.

Her small body became the only barrier separating the pregnant woman from the blade.

“Run, Emily.”

Emily could not move.

She stared at the man she had slept beside for six years.

Daniel held the knife near his thigh, not yet raised, but his intention had already entered the room.

The head of security approached from the side.

“Put it down.”

Daniel’s eyes remained fixed on Emily.

“You do not understand what she has done.”

Sophie kept both arms extended behind her, forcing Emily farther away.

“What did I do?” Emily asked.

“You brought her into this house.”

“I did not hire Sophie. You approved the household staff.”

Daniel’s breathing changed.

That answer had struck something.

He stepped closer.

Sophie braced herself.

A chain slipped from beneath the collar of her burgundy uniform.

A small silver locket fell against her chest.

The locket opened when it struck one of the crystal fragments.

Emily saw the photograph inside.

Her entire body became still.

The image was old and faded.

A younger version of Emily’s father stood beside a woman Emily had never seen.

Between them rested a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the opposite side of the locket was another photograph.

Emily recognized it immediately.

It was herself at three years old, sitting on her father’s shoulders beneath the apple trees at the Carter summer house.

Only three copies of that photograph had ever existed.

One belonged to Emily.

One had been buried with her father.

The third had disappeared from his private desk after his death.

Emily looked at Sophie.

“Where did you get that?”

Daniel’s knife rose.

The head of security seized his wrist.

Another guard struck Daniel’s forearm against the marble column until the knife fell.

Daniel fought with sudden desperation.

He kicked at the closest guard and reached toward Sophie’s locket.

“Take that from her.”

The security team forced him against the floor.

Emily stared at the open photographs.

Sophie closed one hand around the locket.

Daniel twisted beneath the guards.

“That does not belong to her.”

Sophie looked down at him.

“It belonged to my mother.”

Emily’s breathing became shallow.

“Who was your mother?”

Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.

“Grace Lane.”

The name moved through Emily like a forgotten sound.

She had heard it once, years earlier, during an argument between her parents.

Her mother had shouted that Grace Lane had destroyed their family.

Her father had ordered everyone from the room.

Emily had been twelve.

The name was never spoken again.

Daniel stopped struggling.

That frightened Emily more than the knife.

He looked toward Sophie with pure hatred.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

The ballroom doors opened as police officers entered.

Daniel lowered his face against the marble.

Emily understood then that her husband had not discovered Sophie’s identity because of the locket.

May you like

He had already known it.

Continue to the next part: Emily reaches the hospital while Sophie explains why she entered the Carter mansion under another name and why Daniel had been watching her long before the chandelier fell.
