Chapter 5 - THE FORTY ONE HOURS ELENA SURVIVED
The clinic had closed one year after Elena’s death.
It stood near the Wisconsin border beneath the name Greenhaven Neurological Recovery Center.
Publicly, it treated patients requiring privacy after accidents.
Privately, it operated for wealthy families who wanted medical events kept outside ordinary hospital systems.
Dr. Anthony Vale served as medical director.
Federal agents searched the abandoned building.
Most patient records had been destroyed.
The basement archive remained sealed behind a mechanical lock.
Marcus provided the code in exchange for consideration at sentencing.
Inside, investigators found Elena’s admission file.
She arrived at 11:42 p.m. on the night of the crash.
Her injuries included broken ribs, internal bleeding, and a head wound.
She was conscious.
She repeatedly asked for Victor and Ethan.
No one contacted them.
The intake document listed Serena Montigue as authorized family representative.
Dr. Vale performed surgery and stabilized Elena.
She could have survived with continued treatment.
Then the medication orders changed.
Pain control increased.
Fluids decreased.
A blood transfusion was canceled.
Elena died forty one hours after admission.
The official death certificate listed the roadside crash as the time and place of death.
The body Victor buried had been transported from Greenhaven afterward.
He had stood beside Elena’s coffin while Serena attended from the rear of the funeral chapel wearing a black veil.
Victor had not known her then.
She had watched him bury the sister she allowed to die.
A nurse named Rebecca Cole had signed Elena’s final chart.
Investigators located her living in Idaho under a changed surname.
She had left nursing after Greenhaven closed.
Rebecca agreed to speak only after receiving witness protection.
Her recorded statement was played inside a federal interview room.
“Elena knew Serena was her sister,” Rebecca said. “She kept asking her to protect the baby.”
“Did Serena visit?” an investigator asked.
“Every day.”
“What did they discuss?”
“Company shares. A trust amendment. A confession blaming Victor.”
“What confession?”
“Serena wanted Elena to say Victor caused the crash during a violent argument.”
Victor closed his eyes.
Serena had been building the case against him before Elena died.
The guardianship petition was part of the same plan.
“Did Elena sign?” the investigator asked.
“No.”
“What happened after she refused?”
“Dr. Vale stopped the transfusion.”
“On whose order?”
Rebecca looked toward the camera.
“Serena’s.”
The nurse had attempted to restart treatment.
Dr. Vale threatened her license and family.
Rebecca secretly recorded part of Elena’s final night.
The audio remained inside an old phone stored in a bank box.
Elena’s voice was weak.
“You cannot become his mother by killing me.”
Serena answered:
“I should have had your name, your house, and your inheritance before you ever met Victor.”
“Ethan is not responsible.”
“He is the only reason the trust cannot be corrected.”
“What are you going to do to him?”
“Nothing, if you sign.”
Elena coughed.
Then she said:
“Victor will find you.”
Serena laughed softly.
“Victor believes whatever Marcus places in front of him.”
The recording ended with Elena asking Rebecca to save a message for her son.
Rebecca never delivered it.
She was threatened into silence.
Now she gave the message to Victor.
Ethan,
You may grow up hearing that your mother was weak.
I was frightened, but fear is not weakness.
The people around you will teach you that power means making others obey.
They are wrong.
Power means remaining human when fear gives you permission not to be.

Victor listened without moving.

Serena had used violence to control Ethan.

Rebecca described one final event.
Before Elena died, she hid a small storage key inside the lining of Rebecca’s uniform.
The key opened a locker at Chicago Union Station.
Rebecca had been too frightened to use it.

A copy of the original guardianship trust.
And a document signed by Charles Whitestone before his death.
It acknowledged Serena as his biological daughter.
The document granted her twenty percent of a private family fund but no control over Whitestone International.
Elena had been preparing to release it publicly.
Serena would have received recognition and money.
She killed Elena before the announcement.
“She could have had what she claimed she wanted,” Lily said after Rachel explained.
“She wanted more,” Victor answered.
“No.”
Lily looked toward Ethan.
“She wanted Elena to lose.”
Victor studied her.
Lily understood Serena more clearly than the financial investigators did.
Greed explained money.
It did not explain why Serena watched her injured sister beg for Ethan’s safety.
Serena wanted Elena’s life reduced until her own felt larger.
The federal task force located Dr. Vale’s abandoned vehicle near Lake Geneva.
Blood appeared on the passenger seat.
The blood belonged to Serena.
For several hours, investigators believed she might be injured or dead.
Then surveillance footage from a private marina showed Serena entering a boat alone.
She had cut her own hand and left blood inside the vehicle to delay pursuit.
The boat crossed toward a Montigue property accessible only by water.
The estate included a medical suite, a private dock, and a helicopter pad.
Federal agents prepared a search warrant.
Before they reached the property, the secure pediatric residence reported a breach.
A pediatric nurse used valid credentials to enter Ethan’s room.
The real nurse had been found unconscious inside a parking structure.
The woman in the room wore a medical mask and carried a syringe.
Lily recognized Serena’s eyes.
She stepped between Serena and the crib.
Serena raised the syringe.
“You should have taken the passport.”
Lily backed toward the emergency button.
“You hurt him.”
“You destroyed everything.”
“You did that.”
Serena grabbed Lily by the throat and pressed the syringe against her neck.
The door opened.
Victor stood in the corridor.
