Chapter 8 - The Hearing Wade Could Not Control

The county commissioners scheduled an emergency public hearing after residents demanded an independent review of Cain Realty projects.

The meeting took place inside the high school auditorium because the courthouse could not hold the crowd.

My mother sat in the front row wearing her faded pink diner uniform beneath a dark coat.

Her shoulder remained in a sling.

She refused a seat on the stage.

“I own a diner,” she said. “I am not running for office.”

Wade arrived through a side entrance with three attorneys.

Travis did not attend.

Sheriff Harper appeared by video from a detention facility after investigators charged him with evidence tampering, obstruction, and fraud related offenses. The charges concerning my father’s death remained under review.

Mayor Brooks sat at a separate table.

Every alliance inside the Cain network had become conditional.

The commission’s attorney began with land transfers.

Thirty families had sold property to Cain Realty after disputed liens, failed inspections, or unexplained criminal complaints.

In twenty four cases, Sheriff Harper’s office generated the triggering report.

In nineteen, Mayor Brooks or her staff approved a zoning or enforcement action.

In seventeen, the same appraisal company reduced property values before Cain purchased them.

Wade’s attorneys argued correlation did not establish conspiracy.

Then Martha Lane testified.

She explained the altered environmental reports and produced the original sample records.

Wallace Grant described the midnight repair.

Kayla authenticated the forty seven second diner video.

The regular customers admitted Harper ordered them not to interfere.

My mother spoke last.

She walked to the microphone without notes.

“My husband believed land was something you cared for until the next person received it. Wade Cain believes land belongs to whoever can frighten the owner into signing.”

Wade watched her.

She continued.

“My daughter came home in a leather jacket. Some people became nervous only after they learned her rank. That should embarrass this county. I was worth protecting before anybody called her Colonel.”

The room remained silent for several seconds.

Then people stood.

Not everyone.

Enough.

Wade’s attorney objected when the longer diner footage played publicly, but the video had entered the assault case and commissioners obtained permission to show the relevant section.

The screen displayed Wade beside the pie case.

Harper’s voice instructed Travis to keep bruising below the shoulders.

The denial that Wade was present collapsed in front of the town.

Next came the recording of my father.

You used my well number on six properties.

Then Harper.

Let this go, Thomas.

Then Mayor Brooks.

The state grant arrives after road approval.

The hearing did not decide criminal guilt.

It removed the protection created by secrecy.

Wade requested time to answer.

He approached the microphone.

“My company created jobs, tax revenue, and opportunity. Mistakes may have occurred in administrative processes, but these accusations are being manipulated by an officer using military prestige to influence civilians.”

Every camera turned toward me.

I stood only when the commission chair invited me.

“My rank is not evidence. The recordings are evidence. The altered reports are evidence. The forged release signed after my father’s death is evidence. The people in this room are evidence.”

Wade smiled thinly.

“You came here with federal officers.”

“Because your documents referenced a federal easement and used forged military records.”

“You intimidated witnesses.”

“Name one.”

He looked toward Wallace.

Wallace stood without being asked.

“Nicole did not frighten me. You did.”

The answer moved through the auditorium.

Wade returned to his attorneys.

After six hours, the commission voted to suspend all Cain connected development approvals and place county land enforcement under outside review.

The state environmental agency assumed control of the contaminated site.

A judge froze Cain Realty assets connected to disputed transfers.

Wade’s company could still defend itself in court.

It could no longer use county offices as private extensions.

Outside the auditorium, reporters surrounded my mother.

She ignored them and asked whether Kayla remembered to turn off the diner coffee maker.

That was Evelyn.

History could change around her, but appliances still required attention.

We returned to Turner’s Family Diner after midnight.

Someone had placed flowers along the counter.

Others left handwritten apologies.

My mother read each without commenting.

Forgiveness would not be distributed because the town finally found courage when protection arrived.

People would have to rebuild trust through behavior.

Special Agent Webb entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

The handwriting on the package containing my father’s garage file had been analyzed.

It did not match Travis.

It matched Mayor Linda Brooks.

She had mailed the evidence through her husband’s company after investigators confirmed her vehicle was present at the crash.

“Why would she help us now?” I asked.

“She requested an interview.”

Mayor Brooks said Harper struck my father’s truck.

Her vehicle blocked the road.

She claimed the plan was to frighten Thomas and take the environmental folder.

When the truck rolled, Harper climbed down the embankment.

Thomas was alive.

“He was speaking?” I asked.

Linda looked toward her attorney.

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked us to call an ambulance.”

“Did you?”

“Harper said he had already called.”

He had not.

Emergency services were notified twelve minutes later.

Those twelve minutes might not have changed the outcome.

Or they might have.

Linda admitted Wade arrived after the crash and ordered them to remove the folder from Thomas’s truck.

Wade did not witness the collision.

He participated in the concealment.

She said the folder went into Wade’s office safe.

Investigators executed a warrant immediately.

The safe was empty.

Security footage showed Wade’s attorney removing a metal case the day after the diner assault.

The attorney claimed it contained privileged files.

His vehicle crossed into Virginia before the warrant issued.

Then Wade Cain disappeared.
