Chapter 4 - THE CHILD THEY NEVER EXPECTED TO BECOME A WITNESS
Sofia called the babysitter from Ada’s secure phone.
The young woman answered in tears.
A man had paid her five hundred dollars to cancel that morning.
He claimed Sofia’s employer needed her to bring Emma to the mansion for a private family event.
The babysitter believed Sofia already knew.
She described the man who approached her.
Short dark hair.
Charcoal coat.
Crowned wolf ring.
Luca.
Sofia’s fear became something sharper.
“He wanted Emma here.”
Alessandro looked toward the schedule inside the rabbit backpack.
“Not inside the study.”
“Then why bring her?”
“Leverage.”
Enzo’s silence confirmed it.
If Sofia discovered the contaminated inhaler or refused to accept blame, Luca intended to threaten Emma’s safety.
He had placed the assignment paper inside the backpack to prove he knew where the child would be.
He did not expect Emma to hear Alessandro through the vent.
He did not expect her to leave the laundry room.
He did not expect a child with asthma to recognize contaminated medicine.
Emma had entered the plan as leverage.
She became the reason it failed.
Sofia knelt in front of her.
“None of this is your fault.”
“I broke the rule.”
“You heard someone who could not breathe.”
“But you said stay downstairs.”
Sofia held her daughter’s face gently.
“Rules are supposed to keep you safe. They do not require you to ignore someone dying.”
Emma looked toward Alessandro.
“Is he going to die?”
Ada answered.
“Not if he continues responding to treatment.”
Alessandro watched Emma absorb the words.
Adults around him often promised impossible certainty because they feared appearing weak.
Ada gave the child truth without cruelty.
He understood why his father trusted her.
Gabriel secured the study through an independent analog lock.
Enzo remained inside.
Alessandro instructed Gabriel to contact Luca and say the attack had succeeded.
Enzo stared at him.
“You are using me as bait.”
“You used a child as leverage.”
“You have no proof I planned that.”
“Then help me discover who did.”
Enzo’s phone was returned to him under observation.
He called Luca.
“The inhaler worked,” Enzo said. “Alessandro is unconscious.”
Luca remained silent for several seconds.
“And the maid?”
“Contained.”
“The child?”
“Still downstairs.”
Emma was standing five feet away, listening.
Sofia covered her ears.
Luca continued.
“Move Sofia’s bag to the study. Security must discover the inhaler before Ada arrives.”
Enzo looked toward Alessandro.
The instruction proved Luca knew the framing plan.
“What happens after?” Enzo asked.
“You take command until the council confirms me.”
“And Paolo?”
Another pause.
“What about him?”
“You promised the Morettis would answer for his death.”
“They will.”
“Alessandro was a child when Paolo died.”
“He inherited the debt.”
Enzo’s expression changed.
Luca had used his brother’s death without caring who was responsible.
“Meet me at the harbor office,” Luca said. “Bring the trust seal and the study key.”
The call ended.
Alessandro looked at Enzo.
“Did he ever show you proof my father ordered Paolo’s death?”
“No.”
“You trusted his word.”
“I trusted the hatred in my own memory.”
That admission did not absolve him.
It revealed the weakness Luca had exploited.
Gabriel found a chemical bottle hidden inside Enzo’s medical kit.
The label matched Sofia’s industrial cleaner, but the batch number belonged to a supplier used by Luca’s harbor company.
Ada sealed it.
Enzo lowered his head.
“I replaced the inhaler.”
Sofia held Emma closer.
“Why?”
“Luca said Alessandro planned to surrender the organization and give the harbor contracts to federal investigators.”
Alessandro’s eyes hardened.
“That part was true.”
Everyone became still.
For eight months, Alessandro had been quietly separating legitimate Moretti businesses from the criminal network his father left behind.
He had opened discussions with federal prosecutors through private counsel.
He intended to provide records, accept consequences for his own conduct, and prevent Luca from inheriting an empire built through intimidation.
Enzo believed surrender would destroy every man who had remained loyal to the family.
Luca told him Alessandro planned to save himself by blaming everyone else.
“Were you?” Enzo asked.
“No.”
Alessandro’s answer came without hesitation.
“My agreement offered no immunity.”
He had planned to plead guilty to financial crimes and obstruction connected to earlier years.
The legitimate companies would enter an independent trust protecting employees from criminal control.
Luca would lose the empire he expected.
Enzo would face investigation.
The inhaler attack was meant to stop Alessandro before he signed the final cooperation agreement that evening.
“What happens to Sofia?” Alessandro asked.
Enzo looked toward the floor.
“She would be accused. Luca would arrange an attorney. After the case disappeared from the news, she would receive money and a new identity.”
“You believed that?”
“I wanted to.”
Sofia stared at him.
“You planned to destroy my daughter’s mother and called money mercy.”
Enzo had no answer.
Ada examined the residue on his glove.
“It is not only cleaner.”
She detected a second compound used to accelerate respiratory absorption.
The mixture required medical knowledge.
Enzo knew security and weapons.
Luca knew finance and shipping.
Neither had the expertise to prepare it safely.
Someone with access to Alessandro’s medical history had helped them.
Ada looked toward the locked medicine drawer.
Only one outside physician had reviewed Alessandro’s new inhaler prescription.
Dr. Nathan Cole, Ada’s former assistant.
Before anyone could call him, the private telephone rang.
Alessandro answered on speaker.
Luca’s voice filled the room.
“You lied, Enzo.”
No one spoke.
Luca continued.
“The child is upstairs. I can see her through the study camera.”
The digital recording light had been disabled.
The camera was still transmitting.
