Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO BROUGHT FLOWERS

Rourke saw his initial on Lily’s board.

His expression did not change.

That was how I knew she was telling the truth.

An innocent man would have asked what the words meant.

Rourke looked toward the door and counted the people in the room.

One nurse.

Detective Cole.

Agent Pierce.

Me.

He placed the flowers on the counter.

“I assume there has been a misunderstanding.”

I moved between him and Lily.

“Leave.”

“I commanded you for nine years.”

“You are not commanding me now.”

Rourke’s eyes moved toward my uniform.

I had arrived directly from a veterans ceremony before the hospital called. The camouflage no longer represented his authority.

It represented the years I had spent believing men like him deserved immediate obedience.

“I came to help,” he said.

“You entered a protected trauma floor without being cleared.”

“My foundation works with the hospital.”

“That is not an answer.”

Agent Pierce requested identification.

Rourke handed it over calmly.

“I understand Daniel is experiencing distress.”

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“His daughter identified you as her attacker.”

“She cannot speak.”

“She can write.”

Rourke looked at Lily.

“You have been through significant trauma. Memory can become confused.”

Lily raised the marker.

Her fingers shook.

She wrote:

YOU SAID MOM BEGGED.

The room became silent.

Rourke’s eyes hardened.

Only for a second.

“What did Rachel beg for?” I asked.

Rourke addressed Pierce instead.

“You are allowing a medicated patient to make accusations involving classified activity.”

Pierce stepped closer.

“You transferred Caleb Ward into McKenna Center under a false name.”

“That is a serious allegation.”

“We have the record.”

“You have fragments created by a compromised system.”

“You signed Project Lantern.”

“The project protected soldiers.”

“It drugged them without consent.”

Rourke looked at me.

“Daniel, you were there. You remember the condition of your men.”

“I remember what you told me.”

“I kept the team functioning.”

“You changed our memories.”

“I prevented panic from destroying the mission.”

“You kept Caleb alive and called him dead.”

“Caleb was dangerous.”

“To whom?”

Rourke did not answer.

Lily’s marker moved again.

MOM RECORDED HIM.

Rourke took one involuntary step toward the bed.

Cole blocked him.

“Do not approach her.”

Rourke raised both hands.

“This interview is finished until counsel arrives.”

“You were not being interviewed,” Cole said. “You entered a victim’s room.”

Rourke turned toward the door.

Pierce informed him that federal agents would escort him from the hospital and preserve his devices.

“Am I detained?”

“Not yet.”

“Then you cannot take my phone.”

“I can preserve it if you voluntarily surrender it.”

Rourke smiled.

“You should choose your words more carefully.”

He left with the flowers still on the counter.

Cole followed until hospital security confirmed Rourke had exited.

Lily began trembling.

I sat beside her.

“You are safe.”

She stared at me.

I corrected myself.

“You are protected right now. We are watching every entrance.”

Her breathing slowed.

Promises needed boundaries after powerful people had already entered her room.

Lily wrote:

CALEB SAVED PHONE.

“He recovered your phone?”

YES.

“Why was it beside you?”

HE CAME BACK.

The audio recording had made Caleb appear part of the attack.

Lily explained through short written phrases.

Rourke and Michael Price confronted her outside the lab.

Caleb followed them.

He attempted to take Lily away.

Rourke ordered him to hold her.

Caleb obeyed until Price struck her.

When Rourke ordered the jaw attack, Caleb released Lily and fought Price.

Rourke struck Lily with a compact metal baton.

Once.

Twice.

Again after she fell.

Caleb dragged Rourke away.

He returned Lily’s phone before escaping.

The command on the recording had been followed by Caleb’s silence because he was resisting.

The man who appeared beside her had not attacked her.

He had prevented the final blow from killing her.

“Why did he not stay?”

Lily wrote:

THEY CONTROL HIS MEDS.

Project Lantern had never ended for Caleb.

Rourke kept him dependent on medication supplied through McKenna Center.

Without it, Caleb experienced seizures and severe withdrawal.

Rourke could make him obey by controlling his body.

Pierce obtained an arrest warrant for Michael Price.

Campus security claimed he had gone home.

His house was empty.

His vehicle was found near the Illinois River.

Blood marked the rear seat.

The amount was small.

A staged trail.

Price had disappeared into the same system used for Caleb.

Cole requested the full McKenna Center search warrant.

The university fought it through emergency court filings.

Its attorneys claimed active defense research and protected veteran data.

The judge approved a limited search.

Before agents entered, every fire alarm inside McKenna Center activated.

Smoke appeared from the basement.

Rourke’s people were destroying the archive.

Pierce called from the campus.

“We found a sealed medical wing under the science building.”

“How many patients?”

“At least six.”

“Caleb?”

“Unknown.”

The hospital lights went out.

Emergency power activated one second later.

Lily’s heart monitor continued.

The electronic door locks did not.

A man in a campus security jacket entered through the stairwell.

Michael Price.

He carried a handgun and a folded transfer document.

Two orderlies followed with a stretcher.

Price pointed the weapon toward the nurse.

“Lily Mercer is being moved under federal authority.”

Cole raised his hands slowly.

“You are holding a gun inside a pediatric trauma unit.”

Price looked toward me.

“Colonel Rourke said Atlas Six would understand.”

I moved in front of Lily.

“Understand what?”

“The girl goes with us, or Caleb Ward stops receiving treatment.”

Lily reached for my hand.

Price continued.

May you like

“You can save your daughter or the man you buried.”

Continue to the next part: Daniel must choose while armed men attempt to remove Lily from the hospital.
