Chapter 3

Richard had imagined meeting his daughter thousands of times.

But never like this.

Never after losing ten years.

Her name was Emma.

She was nine years old.

She had Lauren's eyes.

Lauren's kindness.

Lauren's quiet strength.

When Richard entered the hospital room...

Emma looked at him.

Confused.

"Who is he?"

Lauren stayed silent.

Richard couldn't speak.

Because he was looking at the child he had abandoned without even knowing her.

Finally, Lauren answered.

"He's someone who wants to know you."

Emma looked at Richard.

"Why?"

The question destroyed him.

Because he didn't have a good answer.

"I made mistakes."

Emma tilted her head.

"Did you leave because you didn't love us?"

Richard felt tears forming.

Children didn't ask complicated questions.

They asked honest ones.

"I thought I knew what I wanted."

He whispered.

"But I was wrong."

Emma looked at him.

Then looked at Lauren.

"Mom said people can change."

Richard looked surprised.

Lauren smiled slightly.

"She always believed that."

Over the next few weeks...

Richard changed.

Not publicly.

Not for his reputation.

For Emma.

He attended appointments.

Learned about her condition.

Stayed beside Lauren.

And slowly...

He understood something.

Lauren had never wanted revenge.

She wanted him to understand.

One evening, Richard found Lauren alone.

"I was cruel to you."

She didn't deny it.

"I made you feel worthless."

"You did."

"I destroyed years of your life."

Lauren looked at him.

"Yes."

He lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

This time...

The apology was different.

Not because he feared losing something.

Because he finally understood the pain he caused.

Lauren nodded.

"I believe you mean it."

"But forgiveness takes time."

Richard accepted that.

Because he finally learned something.

Apologies don't erase damage.

They only begin repairing it.

Months later...

Emma's treatment succeeded.

Her condition stabilized.

The day Richard heard the news...

He cried.

Not as a businessman.

Not as a powerful man.

As a father.

Lauren watched him.

And for the first time in years...

May you like

She saw the man she once loved.

Not the man pride had created.
