Chapter 5 - THE AIRFIELD EXCHANGE

Victoria selected Hartwell Field because the company owned every gate, camera, vehicle, and employee on the property.

Federal agents could surround the airfield.

They could not enter the hangar without risking Hannah.

The nurse sat beneath the aircraft wing with her wrists bound.

Marcus Vale’s deputy held a weapon several feet behind her.

Victoria wore the same beige suit from the boardroom.

The daylight had faded into the cold gray of early evening.

Her appearance remained controlled.

Only the missing pearls revealed that the escape had not unfolded perfectly.

She wanted Rose brought to the hangar.

No federal agents.

No Army investigators.

Daniel and me.

I refused before the negotiator finished repeating the demand.

“My daughter does not enter that building.”

Daniel nodded.

“We find another way.”

The federal commander studied the airfield map.

The private jet stood fueled.

Its planned destination was a medical research island outside United States jurisdiction.

Hartwell Medical Logistics maintained a facility there.

The hidden children may have passed through the same route.

Victoria did not intend only to escape.

She intended to preserve the system.

Hannah managed to look directly at the nearest hangar camera.

She blinked several times.

Three.

Pause.

Two.

Pause.

One.

Military signal patterns.

Three armed people.

Two exits.

One child file.

Hannah had located the original archive.

She was not asking only for rescue.

She was telling us what remained inside.

Daniel watched the feed.

“Can she hear us?”

“No.”

“Can Victoria?”

“The negotiator has a direct line.”

Daniel requested the phone.

He stood inside the command vehicle looking at the woman who raised him.

“Mother.”

“You finally sound like yourself.”

“What does that mean?”

“Focused.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“I am protecting the Hartwell family.”

“Rose is the Hartwell family.”

“She is a biological event attached to a woman who despises us.”

I stood beside him.

Victoria could see me through the secure feed.

“I do not despise your family,” I said. “I stopped being afraid of it.”

Her expression changed.

She had always interpreted obedience as respect.

Resistance felt like hatred because it proved her influence had ended.

“Bring the baby,” she said.

“No,” Daniel answered.

“Hannah Price will die.”

“That will be your decision.”

“You will carry it.”

Daniel’s face remained still.

“No. You have spent my life placing your choices inside other people’s hands. Not this time.”

Victoria stepped closer to the camera.

“You think Claire will return to you because you defend her now?”

“This is not about my marriage.”

“It is always about ownership.”

“That is how you understand love.”

The words struck deeper than shouting could have.

Victoria looked toward Hannah.

The armed man raised the weapon slightly.

The federal commander signaled that a tactical team had reached the rear maintenance channel.

They needed four minutes.

Daniel continued speaking.

“Why did you hide Arthur Reed’s son?”

“Arthur wanted the chief financial position.”

“He believed his baby died.”

“He needed focus.”

“Where is Jacob?”

“Safe.”

“Where are the others?”

“Protected.”

“From their parents?”

“From public conflict.”

Daniel looked toward me.

I saw the truth reaching him.

Victoria did not consider the hidden children victims.

She considered them assets stored away from unstable adults.

The company provided care, education, and controlled identities.

In return, executives remained obedient because Victoria could reveal or withhold the children.

Parenthood had become leverage.

The tactical team reached the service corridor.

Two minutes.

Victoria received a message from someone inside the command network.

Her eyes moved toward the rear hangar wall.

“They are coming through maintenance.”

The federal commander swore softly.

Someone had warned her.

Victoria pulled Hannah toward the aircraft.

The armed man fired into the ceiling.

Everyone moved.

Hannah drove her shoulder into Victoria’s body.

They fell near the jet stairs.

The tactical team entered through both exits.

The gunman turned.

Federal officers forced him down before he aimed.

A second guard ran toward the cockpit and discovered the pilot had already disabled the engines.

Hannah crawled away.

Daniel and I watched from the command feed until officers announced the hangar secure.

Victoria remained on the floor.

She looked toward the camera.

Then she smiled.

The expression frightened me more than panic would have.

Agent Grant’s phone rang.

The person who warned Victoria had activated the family archive remotely.

Every hidden child file was being deleted.

The signal came from Hartwell headquarters.

Someone still inside the boardroom had been working with her.

Arthur Reed stood near the evidence table when federal agents returned.

His tablet displayed the deletion screen.

Daniel looked at his chief financial officer.

“Why?”

Arthur’s face broke.

May you like

“Because Victoria promised to tell me where my son is.”

Continue to the next part: A father who believed his child died begins destroying the evidence that could lead every hidden family to the truth.
