Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING REHEARSAL

The photograph did not come from inside Rosa’s bedroom.
It came from a camera hidden across the street.
The angle passed through a narrow space between the curtains.
Rosa’s security team moved her and Lily immediately.
Only four people received the new location.
Rosa’s attorney.
Abigail.
The independent security director.
Ethan.
No message followed.
Samuel believed the threat would end the rehearsal.
Ethan allowed him to believe it had.
A cancellation notice went to every wedding guest.
A second private message went to Samuel, Richard, and Victoria.
It stated that Ethan would sign the marital amendment quietly inside the east parlor to prevent further scandal.
They arrived separately.
Samuel entered first.
Richard followed carrying a leather document case.
Victoria arrived last in the same cream dress she had worn when she shoved Lily.
She had chosen it deliberately.
Perhaps she believed returning to the original image could restore her power.
The piano bench remained empty.
The trust certificate had been replaced with a copy.
Every camera in the parlor transmitted to independent investigators outside the estate.
Ethan stood near the piano.
“You came,” Victoria said.
“You knew I would.”
She looked at his bare hand.
He no longer wore the engagement band.
“Where is Rosa?”
“Safe.”
“And Lily?”
“Safe.”
Samuel placed the marital amendment on the piano.
“Then we can resolve this without another performance.”
Ethan opened the document.
The clauses had changed.
Victoria would receive no authority.
Samuel would become temporary trust director.
Richard’s company would receive consulting rights.
Victoria read the page.
Her face hardened.
“You changed the agreement.”
Samuel did not look at her.
“The family requires experienced control.”
“You promised me the trust.”
“I promised you protection.”
“You used me.”
“You accepted the role.”
Victoria looked toward Ethan.
For one brief moment, he saw the frightened young woman beneath the entitlement.
Then she chose anger.
She removed a flash drive from her purse.
“Everything is on this.”
Richard stepped toward her.
“Victoria.”
She moved away.
“Rosa’s letter. Vale’s reports. The surveillance. Samuel’s transfer instructions.”
Samuel’s expression remained calm.
“You will not leave the room with it.”
Victoria laughed.
“You still think I came for the wedding.”
She had come to trade evidence for immunity.
Richard reached for the drive.
Ethan blocked him.
No one shouted.
No one needed to.
The room had become exactly what every hidden conspiracy eventually became.
A group of people discovering that mutual fear was not loyalty.
Samuel looked toward Ethan.
“You arranged this.”
“Yes.”
“You recorded us.”
“Yes.”
“You endangered the family company.”
“You endangered a child.”
Samuel’s eyes moved toward the piano.
“The original certificate is still inside.”
He stepped toward the bench.
Ethan did not stop him.
Samuel played the musical sequence and opened the hidden drawer.
The certificate copy waited inside.
He removed it and signed the temporary control line.
Richard signed as witness.
Victoria watched.
“You altered the beneficiary record before Lily was recognized,” Samuel said. “The company remains protected.”
Abigail entered through the parlor doors.
“The certificate you signed is an evidentiary copy.”
Samuel stared at her.
“The original was filed with the court this morning.”
Two independent investigators entered behind her.
Richard stepped backward.
Victoria placed the flash drive on the piano.
“I want an agreement.”
Abigail answered.
“You may cooperate. You are not promised immunity.”
Victoria looked toward Ethan.
“You would let them prosecute me after everything between us?”
Ethan’s expression did not change.
“There was nothing between us that excused what you did to Lily.”
The investigator collected the drive.
Its files confirmed the forged death notice, custody order, medical plan, surveillance system, and financial arrangement.
Samuel’s signature appeared across every major instruction.
Richard controlled the payments.
Victoria coordinated the household monitoring.
Dr. Vale prepared the false medical records.
The case no longer depended on one frightened witness.
Samuel looked toward the engagement ring sealed inside Abigail’s evidence case.
“Eleanor would have understood.”
Ethan answered quietly.
“My mother understood enough to build a system against you.”
The investigators escorted Samuel and Richard from the room.
Victoria remained with counsel.
Before leaving, she looked at the piano bench.
“I did not mean for Lily to hit the floor.”
Rosa’s voice entered from the doorway.
“But you meant to push her.”
Everyone turned.
Rosa stood alone.
Lily remained at the protected residence.
Rosa had chosen to attend only after the property was secured.
Victoria looked at the woman she had monitored for years.
“You could have stayed away from him.”
Rosa stepped closer.
“I did.”
“You entered his house.”
“Your agency placed me here.”
“You kept his child.”
“I protected my daughter from a threat carrying his signature.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“He was supposed to marry me.”
Rosa’s voice remained steady.
“And Lily was supposed to remain invisible so you could feel chosen.”
Victoria looked toward Ethan.
“Do you love her?”
Ethan did not answer quickly.
Rosa watched him.
The old Ethan would have offered a polished sentence.
The man standing beside the piano told the truth.
“I never stopped regretting the way I left her.”
“That was not the question.”
“No.”
Victoria smiled through tears.
“Then Rosa still loses.”
Rosa answered before Ethan could.
“This was never a competition.”
Victoria was escorted from the parlor.
The wedding agreement remained on the piano.
Ethan tore it in half.
Then Abigail received an emergency call from the protected residence.
The security director’s voice came through the speaker.
“Lily is gone.”
Rosa stopped breathing.
The bedroom window was open.
Button lay on the floor.
May you like
Beside it was a single piano key stained with black paint.
Continue to the next part: Lily disappears while the conspirators are being removed from the mansion.
