Chapter 4

The ballroom doors opened once again.
Three members of the Board of Directors entered, followed by the company's Chief Legal Officer, two external auditors, and a court-appointed corporate recorder.
Their presence changed the atmosphere instantly.
This was no longer a family argument.
It had become an official corporate proceeding.
The orchestra quietly stopped playing.
The waiters stepped aside.
Even the photographers lowered their cameras.
The oldest director approached Eleanor and bowed his head respectfully.
"Good evening, Madam Chair."
Nathan's heart nearly stopped.
For twenty-eight years, everyone in the company had believed his mother held the highest authority.
Yet every board member had just acknowledged someone else.
Margaret forced a laugh.
"This is absurd."
"You can't hold a board meeting during my son's wedding."
The Chief Legal Officer calmly replied,
"We're not."
"We're executing an emergency resolution that was approved yesterday."
He handed Margaret a sealed envelope.
She ripped it open.
Her confident smile disappeared almost instantly.
EMERGENCY BOARD RESOLUTION
Effective Immediately
Margaret Sterling is removed as Chief Executive Officer.
All executive powers are suspended.
All company accounts under her authorization are frozen pending investigation.
A forensic review of executive spending will begin immediately.
Temporary leadership returns to the Office of the Chair.
Signed unanimously.
Margaret looked at the signatures.
Every director.
Every shareholder representative.
Even executives she believed were loyal.
"You..."
"...you betrayed me."
One director quietly answered,
"No."
"We finally stopped betraying the company."
Nathan slowly stepped toward Eleanor.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Did you already know all of this before tonight?"
Eleanor nodded.
"Six months ago."
"Then why didn't you remove her sooner?"
"I intended to."
She glanced toward Victoria.
"But your fiancée begged me for one favor."
Nathan looked confused.
"Victoria?"
Victoria lowered her eyes.
"I asked Aunt Eleanor not to do anything before the wedding."
"I didn't want the happiest day of our lives to become a scandal."
Nathan couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"So..."
"...she protected us?"
Victoria nodded.
"She wanted you to begin your marriage without humiliation."
Eleanor sighed softly.
"I promised her I would wait."
She looked toward Margaret.
"Unfortunately..."
"...your mother made that impossible."
Margaret suddenly pointed at Victoria.
"This is your fault!"
"If you hadn't invited that old woman—"
"Enough."
Nathan's voice echoed through the ballroom.
It was the first time in his life he had interrupted his mother.
"You don't get to blame anyone else anymore."
Margaret stared at her son in disbelief.
"Nathan..."
"I'm your mother."
"And she's the reason Dad's reputation is being destroyed."
Nathan shook his head.
"No."
"You destroyed Dad's reputation."
"You spent years pretending his legacy belonged to you."
He held up the forensic audit.
"These numbers don't lie."
"You didn't inherit a company."
"You exploited one."
One by one, senior managers approached Eleanor.
The first was an elderly housekeeper who had worked for the company for thirty-six years.
She smiled through tears.
"I thought no one cared about us anymore."

Eleanor embraced her.
"I always cared."
"I'm sorry it took me too long to see what was happening."
A chef stepped forward.
"So... are we losing our jobs?"
Eleanor smiled warmly.
"No."
"You're getting them back."
The ballroom filled with relieved applause.
Maintenance supervisors.
Receptionists.
Bellhops.
Managers.
People Margaret had ignored for years.
All stood a little taller.
For the first time in a long time...
Someone had finally chosen them over executive luxury.
The Chief Legal Officer approached Eleanor once more.
"Madam Chair."
"There's one final document."
He handed her a leather folder.
"This requires your signature."
Eleanor opened it.
It was the official appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer.
She picked up the pen.
Margaret watched nervously.
"So..."
"Who's replacing me?"
Everyone in the ballroom waited.
Nathan expected one of the directors.
The board members expected an experienced executive.
Instead...
Eleanor closed the folder.
Then turned toward Victoria.
"My dear..."
Victoria blinked in surprise.
"Yes?"
"I have a question."
Victoria nodded.
"What is it?"
"When you checked me into the hotel six months ago..."
"...why did you carry my luggage yourself?"
Victoria smiled shyly.
"Because the bell staff was overwhelmed."
"And every guest deserves respect."
Eleanor smiled back.
"Exactly."
She opened the folder again.
Then signed her name.
The room fell silent.
She looked up.
"The next Chief Executive Officer won't be chosen because of family."
"Or wealth."
"Or status."
"They'll be chosen because they understand what hospitality truly means."
She slid the signed document across the table.
Nathan picked it up.
His eyes widened.
"So did everyone else's."
Because the name printed beneath the title read:
Victoria Lawson Sterling
Chief Executive Officer
Effective immediately.
Margaret staggered backward as if the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.
"This..."
"...this can't be happening."
Eleanor calmly stood.
"Oh..."
"It already has."
But she still wasn't finished.

There was one final announcement...
One that would determine whether the Sterling name survived at all.
