Chapter 3 - THE REPORT BENEATH THE WEDDING FLOWERS
The original bridge records were not inside Katherine’s inherited boxes.
They had been hidden at the Hale estate.
Robert led Detective Collins, Grace, Frank, and an attorney into a locked storage room beneath the west staircase.
Behind wedding decorations and boxes of family photographs stood a metal case.
Robert entered a code.
Inside were inspection reports, company ledgers, photographs, and an old digital recorder.
Caleb watched from the hallway beside a deputy.
His face had become pale.
“You had the archive?”
Robert did not look at him.
“Yes.”
“For twelve years?”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Katherine’s father had it.”
Robert turned toward Grace.
“Your mother decided what you should believe.”
Grace began crying.
“Do not put all of this on me.”
“Who told Caleb that Daniel Pierce ignored Beatrice?”
“I did.”
“Who knew Daniel ordered the site closed?”
“You did too.”
Grace’s voice rose.
“You signed the override.”
Katherine stood completely still.
Robert closed his eyes.
The bridge project had belonged to Hale Infrastructure, the company Robert inherited from his father.
Daniel Pierce inspected the temporary support system three days before the collapse.
He found movement in two connection plates and ordered work suspended until replacement parts arrived.
Robert faced a contractual penalty if the project missed the next construction stage.
He approved a limited night inspection despite Daniel’s warning.
Robert’s signature appeared beneath the authorization.
The night team included Beatrice.
She had recently joined the company as a junior project coordinator.
She discovered that the crew had been sent onto the structure without the replacement plates.
Beatrice called Grace.
The digital recorder contained the voicemail.
“Mom, Dad overrode Mr. Pierce. The supports are moving. I told the supervisor we need to leave, but he says Dad approved the inspection. Please call him.”
Grace had received the message at 10:41 that night.
The collapse occurred at 11:06.
Grace called Robert twice.
He did not answer.
She did not contact emergency services or the site supervisor.
After the collapse, Robert’s attorney warned that the voicemail could prove the company knew about the danger.
Grace deleted it from her phone.
She did not know Beatrice’s message had also been preserved on a family answering system.
Frank found the copy months later.
“Why didn’t you expose them?” Katherine asked him.
Frank lowered his eyes.
“Robert said the company would collapse. Hundreds of workers would lose their jobs. Grace said Caleb might not survive learning his father caused Beatrice’s death.”
“So you let my father carry it.”
“Yes.”
Daniel Pierce had refused to sign the final company report.
Hale Infrastructure submitted a copy with his signature reproduced from an earlier document.
Daniel accused them of falsification.
The company threatened litigation.
A public relations firm released selected emails portraying him as confused and negligent.
He lost clients.
The Hale family kept its contracts.
Grace told Caleb a simpler story.
Daniel ignored Beatrice.
Daniel hid evidence.
Daniel destroyed the family.
Caleb built his grief around that version.
“You knew I was dating Katherine,” Caleb said.
Grace looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You knew why.”
“I suspected.”
“You encouraged the wedding.”
“I thought loving her might change you.”
“You let me marry a woman I hated.”
“I believed you had stopped hating her.”
Caleb laughed once.
It contained no humor.
Grace stepped toward him.
“I was trying to protect you from what your father had done.”
“You protected him.”
Robert looked at his son.
“That is true.”
Katherine turned toward Grace.
“You knew Caleb believed my father killed Beatrice, and you allowed me to marry him.”
Grace reached for her.
Katherine moved backward.
“Do not touch me.”
The words stopped Grace immediately.
Katherine looked at the framed wedding photographs waiting near the staircase.
For two years, she had believed the Hales welcomed her.
Grace called her the daughter she never had.
Robert walked her through the garden where the ceremony would happen.
Frank toasted her father during the rehearsal dinner.
All of them knew part of the truth.
None had warned her.
The trap belonged to Caleb.
