Chapter 16 - The Other Signature

Before Ryan entered plea, investigators checked whether residency affidavit was the only forged document.
It was not.
There was one more.
A draft authorization allowing Buckeye to verify my employment.
Signature image inserted.
Again, no lender action occurred because verification process required employer contact and application froze.
No financial loss.
But two documents.
Same uploaded date.
Same laptop.
Ryan eventually admitted both.
Why?
He said:
“I wanted file ready so when Emily agreed we wouldn’t lose rate lock.”
There was no valid rate lock yet.
Still, motive made sense in his mind.
Efficiency.
He treated consent as administrative delay.
That was the deeper issue.
The prosecutor amended charge structure based on two documents but resolved in one plea package to avoid duplicative punishment.
Ryan pleaded guilty to forgery-related felony count and misdemeanor falsification? Need exact legal maybe not necessary. Say one felony forgery count and one misdemeanor falsification count, one related identity charge dismissed as part of plea because no financial loss and cooperation. Good.
He had no criminal record.
No money obtained.
No credit damage.
He admitted.
Pre-sentence report considered employment history and counseling.
I submitted victim impact statement.
Not asking prison.
I wrote:
Ryan did not steal a house or drain my savings. The harm was that he used my identity on documents because he believed my future consent was good enough. I want the court to treat that seriously without pretending the financial harm was larger than it was.
The prosecutor thanked me.
Ryan’s lawyer probably did too internally.
Accuracy helps everyone.
At sentencing, judge imposed:
Short local confinement? For first offense forgery no loss maybe community control with 60 days jail suspended? Let's make 90 days county jail with 60 suspended, 30 served weekends? Could be community control. Better: 30 days county jail, two years community control, financial ethics/fraud counseling, no use of my identifying information, court costs, restitution for lender investigation? Lender may not claim. No large restitution. Let's say no restitution beyond documented $1,850 investigative/admin costs if ordered? Better avoid.
He received ninety days jail with sixty suspended, served thirty days, two years community control, and counseling. Plausible.
People told me it was light.
I thought appropriate.
The marriage harm was larger than criminal loss.
Court sentenced offense.
Not my grief.
After sentencing, Ryan sent no message because conditions and lawyers.
Months later, through counsel, he delivered letter.
Emily,
I kept telling myself I never intended to hurt you financially, so I was not really doing something wrong.
I read slowly.
I thought because I expected you to say yes, signing the preliminary forms was just getting ahead.
Then:
That is not consent.
Simple.
Too late.
Necessary.
He continued:
I did not marry you for money. But I did build plans around your money without treating your answer as something I had to wait for.
That hurt.
Because I believed him.
Then:
I also treated your nursing school like a threat because it reduced the income I was counting on.
There.
Truth.
I cried for an hour.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because at last he understood what I had been trying to explain before lawyers.
I did not reply.
Divorce settlement was next.
Ryan agreed to drop claim that I caused damages by refusing refinance.
Good.
He agreed $9,500 joint transfer would count against his share.
Wedding gifts divided.
Engagement ring retained by him with small property offset waived by me? We can say each waived.
No spousal support.
No claim to my savings.
No claim to nursing tuition.
I waived no criminal rights because case already resolved.
He requested confidentiality limited to detailed bank records and lender documents.
I agreed not to publicly publish account numbers or private financial documents, which I never intended.
No clause silencing my experience.
One final issue remained.
Ryan wanted wedding album.
So did I.
Why?
I did not know.
We had one physical album included with photographer.
Digital files could be duplicated.
We ordered second album.
May you like
Each paid half.
Sometimes closure is absurdly practical.
