Chapter 11 - The Basement Invoice

I did not accuse Brent of stealing.

I asked for invoice.

Frank sent.

Reed Outdoor Living billed:

Framing and demolition:

$9,600.

Materials deposit for future electrical and plumbing:

$4,400.

Total:

$14,000.

But electrical work had been done by subcontractor without permit.

Was $4,400 spent?

Receipts showed most material purchased.

About $1,200 still in Brent’s business account as unused deposit.

Not theft necessarily.

Work halted.

He owed refund.

He did not have cash.

Then buyer demanded:

Permit correction or $7,500 credit.

Frank wanted Brent fix.

Listing agent said licensed electrician needed.

Brent was not.

They accepted credit.

Sale still.

Then Frank asked:

“Can we take credit from Julia share?”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Basement benefits house.”

“Unauthorized capital work for Brent’s future suite.”

He sighed.

“Fair.”

He did not ask again.

That was progress.

Then Brent called furious.

“You made Dad say I owe refund.”

“You do.”

“I bought materials.”

“Unused deposit after sale belongs them.”

“I will use on another job and repay.”

“When?”

“Later.”

I laughed.

“Exactly.”

Family’s favorite time.

Later.

Then:

“You think everyone steals.”

“No.”

“I think accounting matters when money belongs to someone else.”

He hung up.

Then Tyler sent Emma apology through Nicole.

Not direct game chat.

A handwritten card.

Emma asked me read first.

It said:

Emma, I was mean at Christmas. Grandma giving me stuff did not mean you were bad. I should not have said she only likes me. I am sorry.

No house blame.

No adult scripting obvious.

Emma thought.

“Do I have to answer?”

“No.”

She chose:

Thank you.

Nothing more.

Good.

Then Noah asked whether he had to see Tyler.

“No.”

He said:

“Maybe later.”

His choice.

Then family therapy with Frank.

He attended alone.

Diane refused.

Dr. Chen? She is child therapist, maybe separate family therapist Michael Stern. Let's not overcomplicate. Frank attended one facilitated session with me through mediator's counselor.

He said:

“I let your mother make you responsible.”

“How?”

“When Brent needed, I asked you.”

“When your mother upset, I asked you to call.”

“When bills needed, I asked you.”

“And when you needed?”

I laughed.

“You turned television up.”

He closed eyes.

Then:

“I thought because you handled, it was kindness not to burden you with emotions.”

I stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“I know now.”

Then Christmas.

He admitted:

“I knew there were no gifts for Emma and Noah.”

My chest tightened.

“You knew before?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Morning.”

“Why did you not stop?”

“Your mother said lesson.”

“And you agreed?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I did not want fight.”

There.

He sacrificed children to avoid conflict.

Cowardice quieter than cruelty, still harm.

Then:

“I am sorry.”

I believed.

Not same as repaired.

Then he asked:

“Can I write to them?”

I said:

“Ask through me. Do not explain away.”

He wrote separate letters.

Emma:

I saw what Grandma planned and I did not stop it. That was wrong. You did not do anything to deserve being left out. I am sorry.

Noah similar.

Emma read.

Cried.

Then said:

“I want see Grandpa someday.”

Noah:

“Not yet.”

Both choices.

We scheduled brief lunch with Frank and Emma only? Could siblings different. Better wait and accommodate separately. Emma chose video call. Noah not participate. Frank respected.

Diane found out.

Called me:

“You are cutting me out and rewarding your father.”

“No.”

“He was there.”

“Yes.”

“Then why he gets contact?”

“He apologized without blaming them.”

Silence.

Then:

“I said sorry.”

“No.”

“I wrote letter.”

“You wrote that you were sorry they thought gifts equal love.”

“That is apology.”

“No.”

She hung up.

Then closing approached.

Three days before, Diane refused pack final bedroom.

Frank called:

“She says she is not leaving.”

I closed eyes.

Sale contract signed.

Closing.

Buyers had rights.

Could become real legal eviction if she stayed.

I did not want.

Then Frank said:

“I think I know what will move her.”

“What?”

“Not a lawyer.”

He invited Emma.

I said no immediately.

Children are not tools.

Frank agreed.

“Okay.”

Good.

May you like

He would have to move his wife without using granddaughter.

That boundary held.
