Chapter 8 - The Housekeeper

Sophia listened to Gavin’s allegation in Detective Ellison’s office.

Her expression did not change until the end.

Then she laughed.

A small bitter sound.

“Of course.”

“What?” I asked.

She looked at me.

“If Lily hadn’t seen him, they would’ve said I did it.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I worked in your kitchen.”

“You weren’t near cake.”

“I had access to staff areas.”

“Security would clear you.”

She stared.

“Would it?”

That question hurt.

Because the first ten minutes after the cake fell, several guests looked at Sophia like she had failed.

I had not accused her.

But would I have if Ethan had collapsed and evidence appeared in her locker?

I wanted to say no.

I couldn’t know.

Detective Ellison said:

“We need facts.”

Good.

The search of staff lockers occurred under property policy and police consent procedures.

Nothing suspicious in Sophia’s locker.

Then Rachel Kim found something in another storage cabinet.

A box wrapped in cloth.

Inside:

Cash.

An empty silver Aquila case.

A duplicate kitchen access card.

The cabinet was assigned to Sophia.

Her face went white.

“I’ve never seen that.”

I believed her.

Belief was not evidence.

Cameras?

The corridor camera covering locker area had footage.

Three nights before party, at 2:11 a.m., a man in maintenance uniform entered.

Face obscured by cap.

He opened Sophia’s cabinet.

Stayed twenty seconds.

Left.

Badge used:

Facilities contractor.

The real contractor was home in Yonkers.

Cloned badge.

The man’s height and build resembled Gavin.

Not enough.

Then Lily surprised everyone.

She saw a still photo from distance during child interview and said:

“That’s the shoe man.”

“What?”

Rebecca Lane asked gently.

“Why shoe man?”

“He had shiny shoes in the hallway.”

The maintenance disguise showed work clothes.

But shoes.

Black dress shoes.

Wrong for maintenance.

Gavin’s party shoes were black patent leather.

Forensics later matched unusual sole wear pattern from another camera.

Not courtroom magic.

Corroborating detail.

The evidence planted for Sophia had been placed before the party.

The frame was real.

Gavin eventually admitted it.

“Dominic told you?”

“I never dealt directly except walkthrough.”

“Then who instructed?”

“Nathan.”

Nathan’s lawyer denied.

But Gavin described the cabinet location.

Nathan had security maps.

Then investigators found a text from Nathan to Gavin’s burner:

CARTER BIN 14.

Sophia Carter.

Cabinet fourteen.

Nathan stopped denying that part.

He admitted helping frame Sophia.

His explanation:

“I thought they were planting stolen property to get her fired.”

“Why?”

“Dominic said she was selling family information.”

“Did you verify?”

“No.”

“How much were you paid?”

“Ten thousand.”

Nathan had sold:

Camera blindness.

Badge access.

Cabinet location.

A staged evidence location.

He still claimed ignorance of murder plan.

Prosecutors had to decide what they could prove.

I fired Nathan formally.

Not because court convicted.

Because his admitted conduct was enough.

Sophia asked me:

“Will he know where we live?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

I changed her security team again.

This time I gave her choices.

She selected a private firm unrelated to Moretti Holdings.

She approved who had access to her apartment information.

Lesson learned.

Then the trust/corporate lawyer called me.

“Alessandro, Dominic’s financial motive may not be what we thought.”

“What?”

“If Ethan dies, Dominic does not inherit a dollar.”

I stared.

“What about Elena’s units?”

“They go to a charitable remainder trust.”

“So why target Ethan?”

May you like

“Exactly.”

The easiest motive had just disappeared.
