Chapter 24 - The Visit Emma Chose

Margaret was released after serving her active sentence, with supervision afterward.

She moved into a small apartment outside Richmond.

No return to old house; she sold it to pay legal expenses and simplify life.

Comfortable enough.

Not wealthy.

Not destitute.

She complied.

No calls.

No surprise school appearances.

No gifts through relatives.

For two years, nothing.

Then Emma turned sixteen.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“I want to see Grandma.”

Every instinct in me screamed no.

I did not say it.

“Why?”

“I want to see if I’m scared.”

That reminded me of something another child might say? But okay.

“Therapist?”

“Yes.”

Dr. Moreno recommended one supervised meeting if Emma truly chose.

Neutral office.

Thirty minutes.

Margaret arrived early.

Gray hair shorter.

No makeup.

Hands clasped.

When Emma entered, Margaret stood.

Then sat again immediately.

“Sorry.”

Emma looked at her.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

No hug.

Margaret cried.

Emma rolled eyes slightly.

Still the same child.

“Grandma.”

“Yes?”

“Why did you dump trash on my bed?”

Margaret answered:

“Because I wanted to punish you for telling Dr. Brooks.”

“Why did that make you mad?”

“Because I knew if you told the truth, I would lose control.”

Emma stared.

“Did you know the pills were wrong?”

“Yes.”

“Did you want me sick?”

Margaret’s face broke.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“I wanted your symptoms to keep you near me, and I convinced myself I knew better than doctors.”

Emma looked at Dr. Moreno.

Then back.

“That’s almost the same.”

Margaret whispered:

“I understand why it feels that way.”

Good.

No defensive correction.

Emma asked:

“Do you think Mom is bad?”

“No.”

“Do you think I was confused?”

“No.”

“Do you think I lied?”

“No.”

“Do you want me to forgive you?”

Margaret took a long breath.

“I want it. But I do not get to ask you for it.”

Emma nodded.

Thirty minutes ended.

Outside, I waited.

Emma came out.

“Well?”

She shrugged.

“I’m not scared.”

“Want another?”

“Not soon.”

That was enough.

Margaret did not request.

No court.

May you like

No backdoor pressure.

A boundary held because everyone finally understood it belonged to Emma.
