Chapter 16 - The Child Michael Had With Vanessa

Lily Cole was twelve when she asked to meet Michael.
Vanessa had raised her after release with help from sister.
Michael had corresponded under family court rules.
He was her biological father.
Different victim relationship.
He had not drugged Lily.
But his conviction affected parenting.
At release, gradual supervised contact.
By twelve, therapist-supported day visits.
Emma watched from distance.
Not jealous.
Complicated.
Then Lily asked Emma:
“Was Dad bad to you?”
Emma answered age-appropriately:
“He gave me medicine I wasn't supposed to have and lied about Mom. He went to prison.”
Lily cried.
“Will he do it to me?”
Emma:
“I don't know, but adults around you know history and you can tell people if you feel unsafe.”
Good.
No promise impossible.
Then Vanessa told me:
“Thank you for not making Emma turn Lily against him.”
I said:
“That isn't my job.”
We were not friends.
Never became.
But hostility ended.
Then Vanessa paid last restitution installment related to false report and funds.
No outstanding legal debt.
She worked as office administrator at unrelated company with employer aware of conviction.
No new offense.
Then Michael’s supervision ended after three years without violation.
No court conditions.
Contact became ordinary adult choices.
He did not ask to move closer.
Stayed in modest apartment.
No business startup.
He said debt scares him now.
Then Emma finished master’s in environmental policy.
She worked for watershed planning agency.
Ordinary career.
She dated Jacob Reed, a civil engineer.
At twenty-seven, engaged.
Michael invited?
Emma decided yes.
Vanessa and Lily?
Yes, separate table arrangement.
Me?
Of course.
Could be tense.
Wedding day.
Michael did not walk Emma down aisle.
She walked with me? Maybe she chose alone.
Let's say Emma walked alone.
She said:
“I’m not being transferred.”
Good.
Michael sat.
Cried.
No drama.
At reception, he approached me.
“Congratulations.”
“To her.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“You did a good job.”
I looked.
“So did she.”
He nodded.
No attempt credit.
Then Emma danced once with Michael.
Short.
Her choice.
Lily danced with sister.
Vanessa stayed respectful.
Family no longer simple.
Still functioning.
Then after wedding Emma told me:
“I think I forgive him.”
“How feel?”
“Like I don't need him to suffer more.”
“That sounds close.”
“Do you?”
I thought.
May you like
Not yet.
And that was okay.
