Chapter 14 - Noah Says His Name
The judge spoke gently.
“Do you know difference between truth and lie?”
Noah nodded.
“If I said your shirt is red, truth or lie?”

Then oath adapted.
He promised truth.
Prosecutor Lisa sat at child-height table in separate room.

“Michael is my dad.”

“What happened if you wrote it?”
“He says good.”
“Then?”
“He takes me home.”
“Did he tell Mom?”
“He said Mom knows.”
“Did she?”
“I found out no.”
Then:
“Did he tell you what happens if you tell?”
“CPS takes me.”
Lisa paused.
“What did you think CPS was?”
“People who take kids.”
That hurt.
Then car day.
“What happened?”
“He asked who he is.”
“What did you say?”
“Michael.”
“What happened?”
“He slapped.”
Noah touched left cheek.
“Then?”
“He said sit until I say Dad.”
“Did he lock?”
“Yes.”
“Was car on?”
“No.”
“How know?”
“No air.”
“Was hot?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“Try door.”
“Did it open?”
“No.”
“What next remember?”
“Emily.”
Then Daniel.
“Yellow man.”
Some laughter despite.
“His name Daniel.”
“He broke window.”
Then key.
“Why key in sock?”
“In case room.”
“Did you think it opened car?”
“No.”
“Why carry?”
“So I can get out if he takes room.”
The jury visibly reacted.
Then cross.
Defense attorney lowered voice.
“Noah, Michael bought you birthday presents, right?”
“Yes.”
“Took soccer?”
“Yes.”
“Helped homework?”
“Sometimes.”
“He could be nice?”
“Yes.”

Then:
“Did your mom ever tell you Michael is family?”
“Yes.”
“Did she tell you be respectful?”
“Yes.”
“Did you sometimes misbehave?”
“Yes.”
“Like all kids?”
“Yes.”
“Did Michael tell you storage unit was punishment?”
“He said reset.”
“So he did not call prison.”
“No.”
“Door had handle inside?”
“Yes.”
“Could you pull?”
“I tried.”
“Maybe you didn't know how?”
Noah shrugged.
“I tried.”
Then car.
“Did Michael say he would be right back?”
“I don’t remember.”
Good.
“Did he tell you he wanted you hurt?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you he wanted you die?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you car air was on?”
“I don't remember.”
Then:
“Emily hates Michael, right?”
Noah thought.
“Now.”
“Before?”
“She argued.”
“Did Emily ever tell you not to call him Dad?”
“No.”
“Did Mom?”
“No.”
“Did Grandpa Alan?”
“No.”
Then:
“So decision was yours.”
“Yes.”
That helped prosecution perhaps.
Then defense asked:
“Michael is not your dad?”
Noah looked directly at camera.
“No.”
The attorney paused.
“No further questions.”
Noah left room.
Mom started crying.
Judge called recess.
We met him afterward at child advocacy center, not courthouse hall.
He asked:
“Did I do good?”
Mom immediately:
“You told truth. That was your job. You’re done.”
No good/bad verdict burden.
Then he wanted fries.
We got.

Then Mrs. Franklin teacher.

Michael asked school call him Dad.

She apologized in testimony? Prosecutor shouldn't solicit guilt. She said she believed email authentic.
Technical expert showed message sent from Sarah account, IP home, device Michael laptop.
Could Sarah send from his laptop?

But she denied and was on nursing shift with badge logs.

Then divorce attorney cancellation email.

Then Grandma Susan testified only to emails/letters.
Defense:
“You disliked Michael?”
“I barely knew him.”
“Did you think he replaced your son?”
“No one replaces David.”
Could sound emotionally biased but honest.
Then:
“Did Sarah ever tell you directly stop contact?”
“No.”
Then last prosecution witness:
Financial investigator.
Second credit card opened without Sarah’s authorization.
Purchases mostly Michael business.
This was separate count.
No child money theft.
The state did not overreach.
Then prosecution rested.
