Chapter 5 - THE MAN INSIDE THE BLACK SUV
Grant Holloway surrendered through an attorney after investigators linked his vehicle to Charlotte and Greystone.
He denied intending to harm Mira outside the food hall.
He claimed he was trying to locate her before she became medically endangered.
His earlier actions made that explanation difficult to accept.
Vehicle records connected his SUV to the road where Mira crashed three years earlier.
Another company vehicle struck her car from behind.
Holloway drove the first vehicle.
A security contractor named Miles Reed drove the second.
Reed admitted forcing Mira toward the shoulder.
He claimed Julian ordered them to stop her before she reached a federal auditor.
They intended to take her documents and frighten her into silence.
The collision became more severe than planned.
Mira’s car left the road.
Julian arrived after Holloway called.
The men pulled Mira from the vehicle while she remained unconscious.
Cross administered a sedative.
Then they poured fuel inside the car and set it on fire after moving it farther down the slope.
Holloway asked what would happen if Mira woke.
Julian answered:
“She wakes as someone else.”
The plan had already been prepared.
Hannah Price’s death gave Julian a body.
Greystone gave him a facility.
Cross gave him false records.
Catherine gave him family legitimacy.
Holloway gave him security control.
Mira’s crash was not an improvised cover up.
It was the final stage of a plan created after Julian learned she had copied the financial records.
Holloway described Catherine’s role carefully.
She knew Mira survived.
She agreed that Mira required private treatment.
She approved a funeral to protect the company from questions.
Holloway claimed she did not know the body belonged to Hannah.
That distinction reduced nothing for Logan.
His mother knew the coffin did not contain Mira.
She still stood beside him as it entered the ground.
Rebecca asked why Logan accepted the identification.
Holloway answered:
“Julian said Logan trusted grief when it came from his mother.”
Catherine cried first at the hospital.
She selected the funeral home.
She told Logan viewing the body would destroy the memories he had left.
She placed forms before him.
She sat beside Eli while Logan met the priest.
Every act appeared maternal.
Each one guided him away from verification.
The family knew Logan’s greatest weakness.
He believed Catherine would never exploit his pain.
Holloway also revealed why he followed Mira after her escape.
Greystone notified Julian when she disappeared.
Julian believed Mira would search for Eli before contacting authorities.
Security teams watched schools, shelters, train stations, and former family locations.
Holloway saw her near Charlotte twice.
He did not seize her because public cameras and pedestrians made it dangerous.
He followed her to learn whether she had evidence.
When Eli ran toward her outside the food hall, Holloway began recording.
“Why?” Rebecca asked.
“To show Julian she had contacted the child.”
“What did Julian order?”
“To separate them before Logan believed her.”
“How?”
Holloway requested a break.
His attorney returned with him.
“He told me to create evidence that Mira approached Eli while mentally unstable.”
The plan involved calling child protection services and claiming a homeless woman attempted to abduct the boy.
If Logan defended her, Julian would use the reaction to question his judgment and seek temporary control over Eli’s trust.
Even after Mira returned, the family tried to rebuild the original lie around her.
Holloway did not get the chance.
Logan photographed the SUV.
The food hall manager preserved security footage.
The emergency call created a timestamped record of Mira’s fear.
The hospital confirmed her identity before Julian controlled the narrative.
Holloway’s cooperation uncovered the safe deposit files.
He had not destroyed them.
He stored them as leverage against Julian.
The original drive contained billing fraud, guardianship abuse, illegal transfers, and communications concerning Mira’s confinement.
It also showed Catherine received financial reports from Greystone every quarter.
She knew Mira remained alive for three years.
Catherine had lied when she said Julian stopped informing her.
Logan received the evidence through his attorney.
He watched one recorded board call.
CATHERINE: Is Mira still asking for the boy?
CROSS: Less often after medication changes.
CATHERINE: Then keep her away until she stops.
JULIAN: She may never stop.
CATHERINE: She will when memory becomes too painful.
Logan closed the file.
His mother had not surrendered control after one frightened week.
She had monitored Mira’s erasure.
Catherine requested a meeting.
Logan refused.
She sent a letter.
He gave it to Rebecca unopened because it might contain admissions.
Mira chose to read a copy later with her therapist.
Catherine described protecting the family.
She said Julian convinced her Mira’s investigation would destroy thousands of jobs.
She admitted approving continued treatment.
She claimed she believed Mira would eventually accept a new life.
Mira stopped reading at that sentence.
“They wanted me to accept that Eli was dead.”
“Yes,” Logan said.
“I mourned him.”
Logan sat beside her without touching.
“I know.”
“I missed three birthdays while believing I had no child.”
“I know.”
Mira looked toward him.
“Do not say you understand.”
“I do not.”
That answer allowed her to remain in the room.
Understanding could not be claimed by the person who had lived freely while she was imprisoned, even if he had been deceived too.
Logan’s loss was real.
Mira’s was different.
